Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Hi No.4 - yeah, I've seen 'em, they're HUGE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crying-shame there's no fuselage to attch them to

Or 'Peggys' to hang them on !!!!!!!!!!!!

As for the staff........typical private-run museum - "Left hand don't know what the right hand is...." (etc, you know the score ?)

THOUGH YA GOTTA HAND IT TO THOSE TWO PANTON BROS' - "Just Jane" is superb, so I AIN'T knocking them, but the 'not-knowing' among other staff, is typical British !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There were ALSO massive geodetic wing-sections at the Flixton museum, in the heart of 8th Air-Force 'land' during the '80's , that were criminally stored OUTSIDE - don't know what became of them........I'll have to try & get over there this summer.

Wellington No.2 is at Brooklands, after MANY years of restoration-work, after sitting on the bottom of a Scottish-'Loch' till the Mid-Eighties !!!!!!!!

That Hampden at East-Kirkby looks mouthwatering, but work on it is CRUCIFYINGLY-SLOW

Don't know If I told ya (?) that the original-guy who started the project was "full of beans" & was moving at a considerable pace.

He was a serving officer at Waddington, at the time..........

However, he (very) sadly developed cancer & died at a tragically young age, leaving wife & kids plus this rare Brit' bomber........

I was told that the TWO x "new" guys who had taken over, DID/DO NOT have the same drive or vision as their desceased predecessor a remark that was illicited in response to my........"so why has it taken ten-years to get this far" ? (whilst standing next to the Hampden itself)

The RAF 'reputedly' have the remains of the 'Petsamo' Hampden ("accquired by a national-collection", kinda narrows things down )
(can't remember the serial, but it's P.**44 I.I.R.C. ?)

But the crew fired a flare into the fuselage to destroy it (intentionally) so from what I can gather, we're talking 'Tail-Sections' here !

So, the Canadian Hampden 'from the Sea' remains unique !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll keep ya posted when I next visit, as East-Kirkby is in the neighbouring county to where I live, so when the weather brightens.......

Wow Hornchurch - you ARE the man with the answers! My hat's off to the Panton brothers - the 'Jane' story is remarkable and I thoroughly enjoyed my day there - hope to get back one day soon.

I've seen R-Robert at Brooklands too and mighty impressive it is! So tight is the hangar it's tough to get a good overall photo though.

There were several biplane fighters used during WWII. Can anyone name the biplane fighter that actually had retractable landing gear?

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

The Fairey Swordfish was powered by either a 690hp or 750hp engine, where its replacement the Fairley Albacore had a 1,130hp engine. Question is how what significant improvent did the Albacore have over the Swordfish?

1. Speed and range.
2. Speed and carrying capacity.
3. Range and service ceiling.
4. No real significant improvement was achieved.

Correct answer!!! There was some slight improvements in service ceiling and range, but that is pretty much the extent.

Aside from a closed cockpit, I always thought that there was no advantage for the Albacore. But I could be wrong.
