Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Here's another interesting item.

The Russian's developed two jet fighters in 1946, well ahead of the famous MIG-15. Can you name one or both of them?

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Let's look at our famous P-40 for the next test. Which of these pilots scored the most kills flying a P-40? 1) Robert Scott 2) George Welch 3) Greg Boyington 4) John Hampshire 5 Bruce Holloway 6) Stephan Novichkov 7) Clive Caldwell

Have to go with Clive Caldewell with 22 victories with Stephan Novichkov pulling up second place with 19 victories.

That's what I came up with, however several sources cite other Soviet aces---Kuznetsov, Pokryshev, etc.---but are unclear about which type of plane they flew when scoring their kills. As for the USAAF, the highest figure I could find for P-40 victories was 13, shared by several pilots.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

This may prove to be somewhat controversial.

During WWII, one source indicates that the Luftwaffe's fighter arm scored 46,000 kills in air combat and over-all, through the entire conflict, held a 2.7 to 1 edge in kill ratios versus Allied pilots on all fronts, including the East. Bearing this in mind, which of these is the most accurate win/loss ratio for the Luftwaffe against the Soviets between 1941 and 1945?

1) 4 to1
2) 6 to 1
3) 8 to 1
4) 10 to 1
5) 15 to 1

Correct. It seems that Stalin didn't trust any of his main design bureaus to succeed with their initial jet fighter projects so Mikoyan-Gurevich also worked up their Mig-9 in 1946. Here's a picture of it.

A JU-87B shot down one of two PZL-11 fighters who were trying to engage some DO-17s. The other PLZ shot down two of the Dorniers, I believe.

Correction: Make that a PZL not PLZ in my second sentence, above. I obviously need some r&r.

Yep, Ju-87B flown by Leutnant Frank Neubert in Ju 87B T6+GK shot down a PZL 11 flown by Capt Meiczyslaw Medwicki. Kind of odd that both the British and German airforces started of their aerial victory tallies being scored by bombers.
