Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

How did WW I Ace James McCudden die, and why was it VERY ironic?

He was killed in a crash in route to his new command.

He took off after landing at the wrong airport, but crashed, apparently due to a faulty carburettor. I guess this is ironic because McCudden enlisted as a mechanic?

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Let's shift focus to a more recent conflict---the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s. During this war, Jakal Zandi was Iran's leading fighter ace with 9 kills. What plane did he fly in combat with the Iraqis?
1) Mig-21
2) F5-E
3) F-4
4) Mig-23
5) F-14E

How about an F-14A instead of the E model?

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

During the Korean War, the F-86 built up an impressive edge over Russia's Mig-15------according to U.S. sources. The Russians also made impressive claims, contending that their pilots, plus those of their allies---the Chinese and North Koreans--shot down approximately 830 F-86s, or slightly more than the 792 Mig kills reported by the U.S. Humm? One way to unravel such claims and counter claims is to determine how many planes of each type were ever in the combat theater. While there are no reliable figures for the Migs deployed in this conflict, how many F-86s were ever involved in this war-----counting replacements, new units, etc.?

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

When U.S. intelligence officers first learned of Japan's Kawasaki Ki-61 fighter sporting a liquid-cooled engine they dubbed it the "Tony" because:
1) It was mistaken for the Italian MC-202
2) It was mistaken for a German fighter
3) "Tony" was the next available name on their code list
4) The officer making the first ID was named Tony

Answer: 2) It was mistaken for a German fighter. The Tony had used a licensed built Daimler-Benz engine.
