Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

How did WW I Ace James McCudden die, and why was it VERY ironic?

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

How many balloons did Eddie Rickenbacker shoot down?

Four. I guess they were either harder to kill---or rarer-----since he bagged 26 enemy planes as well.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Prior to WWII, air force strategists in many countries believed in the concept of long range, "heavy" fighters that could escort bombers far into enemy territory. Hence Germany's BF-110, the U.S.A.'s P-38, France's Potez 631, etc. Unfortunately, these heavily armed fighters were easily out turned by more nimble single engined foes---often with disastrous results. Not surprisingly, the P-38's combat record in the European Theater of Operations during WWII was, to say the least, disappointing. Counting battles with the Italians and other German Allies, as well as the Luftwaffe, P-38s had a kill-loss rate of only 1 to 1 in the ETO. By comparison, how well did the P-47 fare?

1) 1.0 to 1.0
2) 1.2 to 1.0
3) 1.4 to 1.0
4) 1.5 to 1.0
5) 2.0 to 1.0

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

During WWII the Soviets received over 18,000 lend lease aircraft from the U.S. and Great Britain. Of these, the P-39 was by far the most numerous with 4952 planes sent to Russia. Which of these was the next most numerous plane given to the Soviets?

1) P-40
2) A-20
3) P-63
4) Hurricane
5) Spitfire
6) B-25
7) C-47

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

I'd guess it was all three.

Nope. Because warbirds move so quickly and, consequently, are seen mostly as blurrs, the shape of the insignia-----a cross versus a circle, for example---is the critical determining factor.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

In the defence of Singapore, between the Hawker Hurricane Mk.IIB and the Brewster Model 339E Buffalo, which aircraft were credited with more confirmed A6M Zero victories?

1. Brewster Model 339E Buffalo
2. Hawker Hurricane Mk.IIB
3. During this period records were sketchy and no firm claims credited.
4. Neither, because the Japanese Navy had no assests in this venture and all fighter kills were either Ki 27 Nates or Ki 43 Oscars.
