Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

What German aircraft served on both Axis and Allied sides in North Africa during WWII?

Fieseler Fi-156 Storch. One was used as the personal aircraft of General (later Field Marshall) Bernard Law Montgomery during the desert campaign.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

When a pilot is trying to determine if another plane is friend or foe by looking at its insignias, which is the most important factor leading to a correct ID?

1) Color
2) location
3) Shape
4) All three about equally

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

When U.S. intelligence officers first learned of Japan's Kawasaki Ki-61 fighter sporting a liquid-cooled engine they dubbed it the "Tony" because:

1) It was mistaken for the Italian MC-202
2) It was mistaken for a German fighter
3) "Tony" was the next available name on their code list
4) The officer making the first ID was named Tony

This is a W.A.G. (wild a$$ guess), but I'll bet the answer is 3.

Correct on the Fi-156! There also was one more, and that would be the Ju 52 flying with the SAAF. At the begining of the war Britain could not support South African Air Force with aircraft, so they used what they had available, which were some civil aviation Ju-52s and Ju 86s. Ju-52s were used to the north with allied fight for North Africa were as the Ju 86s were used at home for coastal defence.

That's the right answer. It appears that as late as 1943 we still thought that the Japanese relied primarily on copies of other country's aircraft rather than being able to design their own. Incredible!
