Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Pulling this one up to the front. I'll give the answer this evening if no one gets it.

Louis Strange is the answer. He was flying a Martinside Scout, emptied his Lewis gun, and had to stand up to try to replace it, as this was early in the war and there was no sliding mechanism to bring it down to the pilot. He was cursing at the old drum to come off when the aircraft flipped on it's back, and he flipped out. He now found himself holding onto the old drum, and now praying it would remain stuck! He finally managed to get a foot hooked in the cockpit, got the plane to right itself, and plopped down into the seat causing it to break. But, he was now able to fly home. There were many witnesses to the whole episode.

Oh, what the heck...BF-109K

If no, then I would guess the Tempest.

Correct on the BF-109K with a top speed of 452mph versus the Tempest at roughly 430mph.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

The Bf 109 had several competitors to be the Luftwaffe's first single-seat fighter monoplane. Which of the following was not one of the aircraft in that competition?

1. Heinkel He-115V-1
2. Arado Ar 80V-2
3. Focke-Wulf Fw 159V-2
4. All of these aircraft were in competition with Bf 109 to the Luftwaffe's first monoplane single seat fighter.

1), It was the HE-112, not the HE-115

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Nope. France gets the prize. it started in 1912.

Are you sure? What's your source?

I agree that France was the first nation to use a roundel, but I believe that Imperial Germany was the first country to use a national insignia for their military aircraft (the iron cross).

The website www.skytamer.com supports my position. Click on the insignia link on the lower left of the homepage to read the information regarding aircraft insignia/roundels.
