Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

I actually came across an aerial victory (Was confirmed later by French sources) that occurred prior to this one.

Was the "winner" a Curtiss Hawk?

It was a British made aircraft. I will modify the question and put in a list of aircraft, much better the way you forward the questions.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Here is a two part question.

1. What type aircraft scored Great Britains first aerial victory for WWII.
a. Blackburn Skua
b. Hawker Hurricane
c. Spitfire Mk. I
d. Fairey Battle

2. What was the type aircraft brought down.
a. Dornier Do 18
b. He 111
c. Bf 110
d. Bf 109

Modified question to stick with format that Epapazian started it off, much nicer.

A Battle shot down a 110.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

Don't forget guys, everyone is invited to pose tests on this thread. Here's a somewhat different one.
During WWII the Finns used planes made by many countries, including those captured from the Russians, in their two wars against the Soviets. Three of the planes , listed below, were not used by the Finns operationally. Can you identify them?
1) Fokker DXXI
2) Fiat G.50
3) JU-88
4) MS-406
5) BF-109G
6) Yak-3
7) PE-2
8) I-16
9) Hurricane
10)Blenheim
11)JU-87
12)Hawk 75 ( P-36 )
13)FW-190
14)Buffalo

Have to go with the Yak 3, Ju 87 and the FW 190 being aircraft that were not used operationally by the Finns.

A Battle shot down a 110.

You are spot on with the Fairey Battle scoring the first aerial victory on 20 September 1939 on a combat patrol near Aachen. My sources show a different type aircraft brought down though. Aircraft brought down was a Bf 109, sure would make for an interesting model if someone would put out a die cast model of the Fairey Battle K9243 crewed by Flying Officer L.H. Baker and Sgt L.J. Letchford.

Yes it would be the F-86. Apparently it beat Russia's Mig-15 by roughly two months in this regard.
