Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

During its operations during WWII, Finland used a variety of aircraft from several forieign sources. In which of the following airframes did they actually actually have the highest scoring ace for that type aircraft?

1. Fokker D.XXI, Morane-Saulnier MS. 406, Brewster Model 239, Fiat G 50, Gloster Gladiator
2. Fokker D.XXI, Morane-Saulnier MS. 406, Brewster Model 239, Fiat G 50, Gloster Gladiator
3. Fokker D.XXI, Morane-Saulnier MS. 406, Brewster Model 239, Fiat G 50, Curtiss Hawk 75A
4. Fokker D.XXI, Morane-Saulnier MS. 406, Brewster Model 239, Fiat G 50, Hawker Hurricane

Not sure I understand the question or choices since 1 & 2 are the same.
However, Ilmari Juutilainen had 94 kills flying DXXI. B 239 and Me 109.

Good catch, but it might be of some help. Answer for 1 & 2 is incorrect, which just leaves 3&4.

They were good, but it was just alittle less than 42 aces they generated.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

That's correct. The U.S. quickly scrapped many of the 18,000 or so B-24s made or sold some to entities like the rump Chinese Nationalist government based in Formosa, who used them to bomb the mainland for some time following the commie takeover.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

This may prove to be somewhat controversial.

During WWII, one source indicates that the Luftwaffe's fighter arm scored 46,000 kills in air combat and over-all, through the entire conflict, held a 2.7 to 1 edge in kill ratios versus Allied pilots on all fronts, including the East. Bearing this in mind, which of these is the most accurate win/loss ratio for the Luftwaffe against the Soviets between 1941 and 1945?

1) 4 to1
2) 6 to 1
3) 8 to 1
4) 10 to 1
5) 15 to 1

Giving this one last shot for someone to answer before retiring it.

Re: Quiz: Test Your Warbird IQ

B 36. as far as I can recall.

The first B-36s reached U.S. Air Force units in the late summer of 1947 and later versions of the plane were still in use six or seven years later ( production halted in 1954 ). In contrast, the first operational B-24s were received by USAAF units probably in 1941 while its first combat missions came in the Spring of 1942. So the B-24 had an operational life about half as long as the B-36...at least as far as the U.S. was concerned.
