Re: B-29 "FIFI" will fly again! :)

well well Skunky, I never picked you as a meat-bomb!!

ayuh....no more though. Truth be told I break out in a cold sweat at the thought of climbing a ladder to get on the roof of my house.

PS, skunky did not jump out of the plane they kicked him outI hear he pooed his pants

..and my only regret is that you weren't underneath me at the time...

It's very cool that Fifi will soon be back to flying status..Hopefully Doc will be joining her soon..

That sure would be a sight to behold, any plans for it to tour in the near
future and would it come to Canada??

I don't think it'll make it up there, but I am sure it will tour in the North some. Just have to wait and see what the CAF's plans are for her after she is fixed. I have heard the B-24 "Ole 927" is at Addison(CFM) right now, and the B-29 will be there soon. I plan to make a trip to Cavanaugh this Friday to see it up close .

Re: B-29 "FIFI" will fly again! :)

I had the privilege of parachuting into an airshow at Offutt Air Force Base about 10 years ago where Fifi was one of the performers. She was parked very close to the area where we were to land and it was a fairly breezy afternoon. I still remember as I was coming in, all I kept saying to myself was "Do not land on the B-29!...Don't not land on the B-29!"....Thankfully I didn't...but I sure came close to that Harrier!

Do tell us more, Skunky! How many jumps, how did ya' get into that crazy hobby, etc. Inquiring minds need to know!

Re: B-29 "FIFI" will fly again! :)

I really have no idea how many jumps I have,Elmer, as I quit logging shortly after around 300, I got lazy with logging and so far behind I couldn't remember, so I gave up the books...So maybe 700 to 800 I would estimate which really isn't a great deal considering there are many people who have several thousand.

When I was a kid I was fascinated with a TV show called Ripcord, which was about a couple of skydivers (one of them was Ken Curtis, Festus from Gunsmoke) who were always getting into adventures. I went out and bought toy parachutes and played with them all day long as well as taking my mother's umbrella and jumping off our front porch. Yes, the neighbors knew then and there I was a demented one for certain.

I loved watching the Army's Golden Knights and Navy's (long disbanded) Chuting Stars at airshows and knew that as soon as I was able to, I was going to do it.

So in 1977 I made my first static-line jump from a Cessna 206 with a military surplus T-10 round canopy and I was hooked...but I only jumped for a couple of years and then took a 13 year hiatus after watching one friend lose the use of his legs and another lose his life. But then I came back in 1992 when it was a whole different world with everybody using the far more maneuverable ram-air type canopies. I was pretty much a casual jumper and always looking for a free ride so I'd sign up for a lot of demo jumps (airshows, fairs, church picnics, etc). I finally made my last leap in December 1997.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic of this thread, so I'll just say that to have been able to share a venue with Fifi (one of my final demos) was honestly quite ..."exhilarating"!

Here's a pic from that airshow, approx. 7000 ft above Offutt AFB, Bellevue Nebraska....that's me in the black and yellow just exiting the door.
