Thumbs up Re: Welcome back to MHII !

Oh yeah, pull prop out just a little bit, give a little turn and retract the landing gear.

BINGO! That was a very cool little feature built in. And not too tricky to build, either -- just a solid challenge. I believe I was 13 when I put that one together. Wow. Monogram was the tops im my books for fit'n'finish.

My very LAST model I built -- I remember it like it was yesterday -- was the Monogram 1:72 P-51B 'Ding Hoa!' flown by Maj. James Howard. I built it in 1967 and it went together like a dream. There was a RAF Malcolm-hood canopy option. Funny how you can now get a Gemini Ace version of that plane, same scale. BOTH, now that I think about it. (I should get the 'Ding Hao!' one for old time sake -- it is such a beaut'!)

Monogram also did a bang-up job on all the U.S. Navy 1:48 planes as well -- Avenger, Dauntless, Helldiver, Wildcat -- I built them all and they were all a dream to do. Sweeeeeet days, man.

Talking Re: Welcome back to MHII !

Undoubtedly the first (and hopefully last) time in history the words "creative writing" and "tank nut" have been used in the same sentence.

I shall remember not to make that same mistake again.

The Monogram U.S. Navy 1/48th series was a nice selection of models. I really liked the Dauntless and the Avenger.

CC, have you seen Accurate Miniatures models of these aircraft? They are the state of the art!

Accurate Miniatures does put out some nice models. I have a couple of there Yak 1s and an IL 2. Super detailed kits, just have to get around to making them.

Do you remember the Airfix kits in a bag? I remember as a kid going to the local hobby shop and seeing those kits hanging on the wall. I still have two in their original bags, but have three others that had to go in to zip lock bags. I still have right around 24 Airfix kits in the box that I have been dragging around for years. Even have two Airfix models of the Captain Scarlet Interceptor. Sure are a bunch of old memories in those old boxes.

Re: Welcome back to MHII !

Good grief, CC, those are true classics! My brother haunts vintage toy shows and has, so far, grabbed in unbuilt condition, just about all the kits he and I built. What a trip down Memory Lane seeing them and the box art. These photos do bring back memories, alright!! JPN

Found three more hiding on the backside of a shelf.

Blimey Cruv'

That put's me & you in the same age-bracket (along with numerous others on here !!!!!!!)

I was 'weaned' on those Airfix-models in Plastic-bags, with their flimsy coloured PAPER 'Header-Cards' (as they're described nowadays, without actually any 'CARD' in them , just paper & 3 x staples !!!!!!!!!!

Those beautiful-boxes too, take me back....... "it's 1973 all over again"

I also built the Macchi MC.200 in the same box & those same Two in your subsequent-post (B.26 Marauder & 'Frog' He.219) tho' my B.26 was in the earlier-issue box (before that one).

Though that B.26 kit wasn't much 'kop', I actually managed to purchase a MINT example at IPMS 'Southern-Expo' back in 2001 for £5 (!)

I've caved in on numerous occasions & bought those OLD issues, merely as a pure 'nostalgia-trip', though, for every one I've bought, I've declined 8 - 12 others !!!!!!!!!

When I finally get round to buying a digital-camera, I'd LOVE to post some of those 'Old-Gems' like you have !

When you think of the MASSIVE IMPACT that these kits have had over 'our' (& subsequent) generation(s) - which have 'moved' us to go on & buy, feed or 'fuel' the Die-cast (or otherwise) market that we all now enjoy today, it's amazing........what feeding a 'kids' imagination can do & the lasting effect it has had, WAY on, into Adult-hood !!!!!!!!!!

We really should have a section/area on here, where we can ALL post pix (like you have done) which show these 'Iconic'-boxes & artwork, which have 'fuelled-the-fire' of SO MANY of our imaginations........ & led to the aircraft choices (& requests) that we see & clamour for today, in Die-cast format.

Seems such a shame that those 'stirring' type pictures you've posted, would/will sink as this thread develops further.

Whaddya you guys reckon ???????????

Well, I was building kits starting at around 10, and for me, mainly Revell at first. That would have been 1963. I progressed the next year to Airfix (Wow! the range!) and never looked back. I did see a few of those bag kits, but honestly, mine all came in the boxes. (I thought the bagged stuff was the contents of broken boxes the retailer jammed back together!)

I think you are on the money, HC (-- and save your pence for that digital camera!.) Maybe something called simply 'Nostalgia'. A catch-all spot for us to post the stuff we run into, much as this thread has (delightfully) strayed! I'm in!

Re: Welcome back to MHII !

Airfix kits in a bag! I remember those so well. Built the Stuka when we were in Ottawa on holidays and put it in the back window of the car (60 Pontiac) so my sisters wouldn't break it on the way home to Moosonee. Sunshine all day long and when we stopped at a motel for the night the wingtips were touching the ground. Boy was that a p-off. The stupid stuff we have saved in our minds. By the way , Schrage 12 hours north of your last looks like trees and bugs , good luck on the new assignment and look out for the moose.

Re: Welcome back to MHII !

My first Airfix kit in a bag was the Hawker Hart biplane circa 1961. It was a bugger to build because of it's complexity or so it seemed to an 8 year old. From a little model costing 2/6 (pre-decimal) to a vast 200+collection worth thousands of euro.
