Re: Steelers , Bucs , Redskins and Titans are out of playoffs

And for the record, it was not LEGAL last year either.

The New England Patriots have been caught using electronic means to steal signals and otherwise violate league rules, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets’ coaches, according to league sources. NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets’ defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion.

.

Unless this is from last season, which I dont' think -- looks like the report from the start of this year. How does it prove it wasn't legal in the 06-07 season? It may not have been legal, I suppose if you really get technical about it -- but it wasn't illegal either. If the pats were exploiting a loophole, so what -- you think they are the first to do so? You think your Steelers never bent the rules to get an edge? Every professional team does and will continue to do so, because this is afterall a biz.

And this report isn't quite accurate (which happens) about the fact that this was some sort of big mystery -- the pats have been doing it under Bill's reign out in the open (something many people who don't follow the Pats closely weren't aware of). Why Bill continued to do it this season after the rule changes expressly prohibiting it and the memos and warnings is a real head-scratcher and a shame. It is my understanding these tapes were not used during the game they were taped at but reviewed later for subsequent rematches... if they were using these in real time that is a new one to me -- and quite comical to picture (what with the steady stream of assistants fire-brigading the tapes to the VCR and TV beside Bill on the sidelines and all... ).

(Though how the Pats taping defensive play calls explains the Packers inability to score against them is too much of a stretch for me. And if you think the Pats are the only team that did this, well I've some Speccast to sell ya... why do you think all coaches no matter who they play from high school up to the NFL tries to cover their mouths when making calls... just to prep for the day that the might play the Pats? The pats may be the only ones that did it this overtly but there's tricks up everyone's sleeves, and yes I believe even Mr. Dungy's)

The horse is now dead far as I'm concerned... I promise not to prattle on about it any more. Mustang, I wish I could buy ya a beer down the street to debate this -- you could even wear your shirt...

And to add my $.02 to Rush's comments -- yeah, what he said

To each his own as far as Brady/ Manning - you can't go wrong with either - but you HAVE to admit Peyton is a lot funnier.

LOL (or more of a sellout... I tell ya I do get a bit sick of seeing Peyton on TV this time of year -- between the playoff runs and commercials there's not escape! That said, I do chuckle at his new "advice" series -- like the minivan one)

So, Manning's funnier... but Brady gets the chicks...

He was pretty funny on SNL, too. Manning does commercials for my company so I give him a few extra points as a homer but I can't disagree that he is a bit overexposed. I got within about 5 feet of him at a corporate event a few months ago. It is unbelievable how big guys like Manning and Brady are in person. I'm 6'1 and a fairly solid 200 but I felt like a kicker.

I kid you not - I saw a van the other day with flame stickers on the side of it and I started laughing - at least he didn't put turbo stickers on it.

I remember those credit card commercials Brady did a few years ago- they were pretty funny.

They cheated last year as well. Which is what my other quote was for. They planted a guy on the sidelines of the Packers, which they discovered and the NFL did NOTHING about it. I will take that beer my friend, and instead discuss something more claming like diecast.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Okay I lied... the NFL did nothing because under the rules at that time it was not illegal to do what they were doing... That guy they "planted" was on the sidelines of every game, far as I know. As of this season it was made illegal, and the NFL did something about it. Case closed. (And still, how exactly does "stealing" D signals prevent the Packers from scoring... )

Now, how's that new display space of yours shaping up MD?

Oh, and you'll love this story:

Right after the first Brady-led superbowl victory my wife bought me a fleece Pats blanket (we were living in Colorado at the time, quite a bit colder...) and shortly after I got a puppy. One night I folded up the pats blanket to make a bed for her, and I showed it to her (first time she'd seen it). She walked right to the middle and peed on the Pats logo!
