| Most Appropriate Nicknames for WW II Warbirds Many WW II aircraft were given nicknames by their manufacturers, those who operated them and, of course, by their opponents. Often, these were simply descriptive, but many were distinctly unflattering. Some examples are: P-47 "The Jug", B-17 "Flying Fortress, P-38 "Forked-tail Devil, F4U "Whistling Death", C-47 Gooney Bird", SB2C "The Beast", B-26 "The Widow-maker", Beaufighter "Whispering Death", Short Sunderland "The Flying Porcupine", JU-52 "Tante Ju", DO-17 "Flying Pencil", FW-190 "Butcher Bird", HE-177 "Fire Lighter", IL-2 "Flying Tank" I-16 "Rata", and Betty "Flying Cigar". Which of these or any others you prefer to cite, were the most appropriate nicknames for warbirds of that era? I'm sort of partial to "The Jug", but "Flying Porcupine" was another apt moniker. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Most Appropriate Nicknames for WW II Warbirds I have always loved the F4U Corsair "Whistling Death" it my favorite one. F-16 Viper is cool....Did you know some pilots called the F-14 Tomcat a "Turkey"...Yep that was it's nick name. Because of its ungainly, turkey-like look when landing on aircraft carriers.
