Re: Most Appropriate Nicknames for WW II Warbirds

Didn't the Germans call their BF-109s Jabos when they used them in the fighter-bomber role towards the end of the BOB and thereafter?

Doesn't quite have the same "Fear Factor" as a P-47 or Typhoon screaming down on you or your tank. Call them what they like, the BF-109 Jabo, FW-190 Butcher Bird, Panther, Tiger, JadgPanther/Tiger didn't keep them from losing the war. Nope, not even a Maus, stuck in its training grounds house could help. Oh how Dr. Suess of me. LOL

Re: Most Appropriate Nicknames for WW II Warbirds

From what I can remember reading many years ago the B-17 was not called the 'Flying Fortress' because of later model's many .50 cal MGs. In fact the early models and prototypes were very much on par with their European twin motor counterparts regarding armament. Because of it's size bomb load, and range it was said it turned America into a fortress because the B-17 was deemed capable of defending it's four corners. If I'm wrong I'm sure I'll be corrected. Let battle commence!!

I've read that too Mr Shamrock!

Cheers CKS1.

BUFF for Big Ugly Fat "Fellow" as a nickname for the B-52 (not WWII buf funny anyway).
Certainly Jug for the P-47.
The Avenger was named to do just that, avenge Pearl Harbor.
Spitfire kind of makes sense too.
