New Ikea bookcases/display cabinets

Last edited by propellerhead : 12-23-2007 at 02:52 AM. Reason: additional info!
I'm currently looking into buying a large display case for my birds. I like detolfs but i want something that will diplay the birds nicer. I saw that ikea now has two new bookcases that can serve as display cases. I really like the "Granemo" since it has sliding doors and, thus, less dust will be able to enter the cabinet. The "Linnarp" is just as nice, except that it has traditional doors. The pictures on the site are not very good, but if you live near an ikea and are looking for a nice and large display case i recommend that you check 'em out. Prices are $389 and $349 respectively. It seems high, but compared to what a real display case costs, i think it's a more than fair price. I really don't like wood cabinets to serve as display cases because they always seem to have to much wood blocking the glass, but these 2 cases have very litlle wood in front of the glass. In the Granemo's case, for instance, there is only one piece of wood that goes across the glass, but it blends in with the shelf and is very discreet. The Linnarp has more wood across the glass, but it blends in with the shelf also. Checkthem out! Which one do you guys like best?

p.s. the Granemo, if i'm not mistaken, has more shelves than are shown in the picture. Also, bot cases are deep enough to accomodate heavies!

both of those do look pretty nice, and the fact they can house the heavies is a big plus. You can also go wtih the Billy system (I did) and add glass doors, which works great for 1:72 (everything but heavies) and 1:48 fighters... for under $200 -- and you can add glass shelves to them. Mine has 9 shelves total, incl 3 glass, and I have about 60-70 models in there without crowding.

Re: New Ikea bookcases/display cabinets

Hey Propellerhead,
I don't know if you'd be interested, but I got one similar to this-

360 Degree Display Oval Tower

Mine is slightly different, it only has three glass shelves inside (total of four shelves if you include the base). I like it because it allows viewing from nearly any angle, and it is internally lighted. Weight load is pretty good; while I don't have any big diecast in there I do have some other heavy collectibles, and there have been no problems supporting their weight.
The only issue I have with it is that the legs broke off while I was bringing it off the truck into the living room- the legs were some cheap plywood/styrofoam concoction- but I got around that by rigging up my own support stand for it. And, it cost about 1/3rd the price of the one shown here. I don't know if IKEA carries them, but other European style furniture stores do. Hope this helps.

Check out a local KMart they have glass sliding door bookcases (Brentwood) similar to the Ikea you mention but are only $199.00.
Heavies fit nicely and the cabinet looks good. I'll try to post some pics for you tomorrow.
On one shelf I have BOL, 909, The S Bitch and 9 Mustangs.... figure I can get another heavy and maybe 2 more Mustangs on that shelf

Re: New Ikea bookcases/display cabinets

The thing I always look for is the ability to adjust the shelving height and to add additional shelves. In many pieces there are only holes drilled for the pegs in a limited area. So you end up with wasted space in the case.

Re: New Ikea bookcases/display cabinets

I think I have seen LINNARP in my local IKEA. It is a bit shaky on it's feet. If I was to put my models in it I would bolt it to the wall...

Can we try with real bullets now?

Drill some more.............

That's what I did. Drilled some more holes, bought the little glass shelf holder thingies at the local hardware store.

The new cabinets do look nice, but, judging from the pictures, I don't think you get a better value than the Billy system, as Pappy indicated, it is very flexible: you can add glass doors and shelves (and put nearly as many shelves in it as you wish). However, the shelf depth is only about 11", but works for most of my collection.

Re: New Ikea bookcases/display cabinets

I considered the Billy cases from Ikea but figured the limitations of holding only 1/72 fighters did not fit what I wanted.
I wanted a case that would hold my 1/72 heavies and get them out of the dust etc. I have a Detolfe with some heavies but did not like seeing the others out "in the open" My smaller 1/72 were already cared for in a couple of glass fronted cases that Sears Canada had on sale last boxing day.
