P-39, now that is a big cannon round.

Last weekend I was at the local flea market and saw a shell casing sitting on one of the tables. It looked kind of big and thought it might possibly be a 40mm shell casing. Asked the guy at the table how much, he said $5.00 and I said how about $3.00, so in the end picked it up for $3.00 (Thought it might look good sitting shelf next to some of planes). Got it home and after measuring it, saw that it was actually a 37mm casing, and of course after closer look at base, yep 1942 37mm shell casing. It got me to thinking (Yep, it hurt), the P-39 was just about shooting tennis ball size rounds. Always thought my .50 cal shell casings looked big, but not compared to that puppy. Just thought I would share one of my flea market experiences and a picture of my find too.

Thumbs up Re: P-39, now that is a big cannon round.

Oh yeah -- that would do some hurts!!! Funny, though, I would have thought the P-39 to be a rather dangerous piece of work, given the armament and the revolutionary nature of it. Personally, I thought it and the P-40 to be brilliant! I guess you still can't overlook the fundamentals: speed, altitude and manoeuveraiblity though, in lieu of revolutionary features!

Thanks for sharing that CC!!

(BTW: That was my 500th post!!!!!)

Interesting -- that really does put the ammo in perspective, thanks for sharing (and $3, too -- that's a find!)

I have 20 mm and 50 cal rounds in my display with my models for a dose of reality, nasty looking things that pale in comparison to that monster!

Great find, Cruver. I've been to LOTS of garage sales in my time, and never found ANYTHING like that. Way to go!

You sure that group to the right aren't pens? I've got layout markers that look like those!

The Oldsmobile cannon of the Bell fighters was a relatively low velocity weapon. I suspect this case to be too big to belong to the 37mm Oldsmobile round...
