A4 or A7 for Blue angels

If they had to do it again, would you prefer the Blue Angels use the A-4 or A-7? I'd vote for a blue and yellow A-7 Corsair.

Re: A4 or A7 for Blue angels

I think the A-7 would look cooler.
But the smaller more nimble A-4 is better suited for the job close formation flying & aerobatics.

Re: A4 or A7 for Blue angels

Oh, I don't know if they would have looked too good in A-7s...They did actually consider the F-8 as a replacement for the F-11, but decided to go with the F-4 since the F-8s were out of production. Now that would have been interesting, although I think the F-4 was the better choice. The Phantom was gorgeous in Blues colors. Too bad they didn't have a very long run in the beast (1969-1973). I was fortunate enough to have seen several performances while in the type.

A slight point of interest: The F/A-18 Hornet holds the distinction (by a country mile) of having the longest run with the Blue Angels. They are now in their third decade with the team (since 1986) and unlike the Thunderbirds with their factory-fresh Vipers, the Blues are flying the oldest Hornets in the Navy's inventory.

Oh, the answer to the question; I would not have preferred the A-7 over the A-4.....too SLUFFy!

Re: A4 or A7 for Blue angels

I've never flown one, but I seem to remember hearing that the A-7 was not extremely...responsive. I wouldn't mind seeing an A-7 in Blue Angels livery, but I'm not sure the Navy would have liked flying their routines in them.

If/When the Blues convert to the Super Hornet, you're going to need ear protection. The Super Bug is one loud (fill in expletive here.) I can't imagine four of these in the diamond, or all six together at one time.

Considering the price of gas nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if they switch to the Goshawk!
