Re: Your #1 pick for WWII Medium Bomber

Understandable -- especially when using reference of the era. I think, at the end of the day, what we are trying to achieve is to send Corgi a clear message that says: "Hey -- there is a LOT of collectors interested in a Hampden, B-29, Stirling, that Black Widow-thingy, etc, etc, how about doing one up?" They won't care about the classification. Now whether they listen or not is anyones guess. I think Hornchurch is correct in assuming because of Corgi's heritage they may likely swing 85% in favour of UK aircraft. (Fine for me, but understandably annoying for our American forum colleagues)

Am I right, or am I right!!

Hopefully over the next couple of weeks more folks will chime in with their choices to help flush out the numbers a bit. Looking at the overall numbers so far, it seems like the top two categories are Single Engine Fighter and Heavy Bomber, with Twin Engine Fighter and Light Bomber bringing up the rear.

Here are a couple of pictures from one of the period reference materials I had mentioned earlier.

Pricey one here at 25 cents.

Hey -- that is quite the book! I passed similar UK one over a couple of years back at an 'Old Paper & Book Show' and now am kicking myself. Yes -- 25¢ would have been quite a sum in those days alright. Love that cover!! Does it have a publishing date? I'm going to take a wild guess at 1941-2?

The Copyright on this booklet is 1942, so you pretty much nailed the date on your first hack at it. This aircraft identification book for its age is in excellent condition. I have a series that were put out in the UK that are also in fairly nice shape that were put out by The Aeroplane. Here are a few shots of them.
Copyrights on these range from 1940-43.

Whitley for me please. It's so ugly it's attractive if you know what I mean. Coastal Command version is also possible.

Wow, CC -- I'm impressed AND inspired. I didn't even realize this stuff was out there. This could add another dimension to my 'collecting' bug. All we had as kids growing up was 'The Bible' . . . our Dad's aircraft recognition book from the 50s. It covers everything (pretty much) but doesn't deal in depth with WW2 wartime aircraft. Both my Brother and I 'cut our teeth', if you will, on this one below:

There is still allot of the old aircraft recognition manuals out there. I have right at 50 aircraft recognition booklets/Manual from WWII period, with the oldest being one from the Netherlands and is dated 1937. Variety ranges from RAF, Luftwaffe, US Army/US Navy and several that were put out for civilian use. For Cold war period an later I have just a little over 20 recognion manuals. That plus posters, 35mm slides, film strips and Joint Service pubs to name a few of the other type items I have picked up over the years. I have a nice copy of the one you show in your picture that I picked up about 7 years ago. I really enjoy reading about the aircraft from WWII and it makes more interesting reading what the views of certain aircraft were during that time period.

Well that is very reassuring to hear. Time to branch out. I do agree, it does bring an additional dimension to the collecting aspect with relevant and 'then current' insight. I have a Life magazine from 1941 that has a photo essay of EVERYTHING that the U.S. had in the air at the time. The photo and caption of the B-19 was especially enlightening. This followed with a complete section with the usual 3 position silhouettes. I'm sure some of the U.S.-centric collectors here would like to hunt out the Feb.2.1942 edition. Ya can't miss it, it has a monstrous P-47 Thunderbolt on the front cover!

That 'bible' of ours -- my Brother managed to get a nice clean copy of that as well a few years ago. Mine still has a number of the crayon scribbled pages that I didn't share with you guys!! (We were so destructive as kids)

Thanx for the insight and inspiration, CC -- and now back to the topic at hand! I think I've inadvertently high-jacked this thread long enough!!

Re: Your #1 pick for WWII Medium Bomber

Way Cool spotter books, CruverC.

All I have is a reproduction set of WWII spotter playing cards ( 3 views of each plane of all nationalities) that I got about 5-10 years ago at an upscale hardware store. They're nifty, but not nearly as cool as real period spotter books.

P.S. - I've always wanted to ask . . . what is a Cruver and why do you collect them?
