Talking Re: Another Halifax Rescue

Nice to see that "p.51-d"'s 'phrase' has gone TransAtlantic, Re; the 'Brussel-Sprout' turret on the W.1048 model
(Gawd knows he's taken enough 'Flak' on the 'other' forum (though I agree with him 100% !!!!!)

smartd ; many thanks for posting the link, on LW.170 - the Aviation-world can never have enough Halifaxes !!!!!!!

Gotta be honest though - even despite the 'teams' optimism, raising (what's left) of LW.170 - it's a whole different League raising something large like this up from the Atlantic, that it was raising W.1048, or NA.337 from the still & freshwater Norwegian Lakes !!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm being bluntly honest here, I'd be suprised if LW.170 'surfaced' with even 2/3rd's of a complete airframe, given the levels of salination, not to mention the effect of 60 years of being bathed in the strong-currents of "the" 'Gulfstream' !!!!!!!!!!!

There's a similar project going on in Wales, where with 'National-Lottery grant' money, they are attempting to raise an Early-War Short-Sunderland Mk.1 for (eventual) preservation at Pembroke Dock (which harboured Sunderland's & Cat's, during the crucial Battle of the Atantic wartime spell)
They've dredged-up one engine & other components, but I'd be pessemistic about the airframe coming up whole otherwise.

This Sunderland (T.9044) sank in a similar-fashion to LW.170 but without the ensuing crashlanding that LW.170 had.

In my heart of hearts, I want both airframes retrieved INTACT (as much as possible) both for their rarity-factor & because aviation-history in WW.II has never been at a higher-level.
As the years go by, the chances of finding one of the Four-engined combatants intact lessens.......

No-one has yet found the recovery 'Holy-Grail' of an intact Short-Stirling (which still sadly, remains extinct, despite surveys on ten Stirling 'wrecks', some of which had aircrew perish in them), so, if T.9044 & LW.170 WERE raised successfully, it would sure raise morale, as well as increasing the numbers of the all-to-few Four-engined 'beasts' that are now legendary !!!!!!!!
Here's hoping

BTW, smartd, what are the 3 x Halifax books you picked up at the sale ????????

Re: Another Halifax Rescue

Karl Kjarsgaard is the man behind this project and was also the driving force behind the search for and recovery of the Halifax now restored and on display in Canada - NA337. If anyone can get this done, Karl can, and I wish him the best of luck. They're in need of substantial funding and if I had Bill Gates' bank account (or even 1/100 of it) they'd have it!
