I'm sure he lasted a lot longer than the sack of rice. Rest in peace, and my thoughts go out to his family.

Re: Another ace flies west: Farewell Jeff DeBlanc

Soon there will be no more....fortunately he survived to live a long life. I wonder how many of his high school students were even aware of his wartime heroics.

The sack of rice story reminds me of the time my brother traded me to a friend of his for a Ted Williams rookie baseball card...The kid's family sent me home that same night and told me to tell my brother he could keep the card.........

Cool Re: Another ace flies west: Farewell Jeff DeBlanc

Sorry to hear that SKUNKY, it just goes to show you that some prople just don't appreciate a priceless baseball card as they do today. I can definitely understand the emotional as well as traumatic problems that you must have undergone in your later years. I too, was neglected at a tender age and when I threatened to Run Away, my own Dad cut me a long stick and put a can of beans in a bandana and sent me out in the road with my straw hat and waved to me as I walked away. My sad story.

Re: Another ace flies west: Farewell Jeff DeBlanc

I feel your pain, G...I had a very similar experience....When I was about 7 or 8 I threatened to run away, and not only did my evil sister immediately pack my suitcase, but the rest of the family lined up alongside the front walkway and applauded wildly as I trudged by, tugging the suitcase along behind me....

Perhaps we can start a support group....

Re: Another ace flies west: Farewell Jeff DeBlanc

Two things. 1) Wasn't this guy on Dogfights? I recall him telling the story of knowing what the value of his life was. One bag of rice.
2) When my son was oh say 2, he packed his little suitcase and said he was running away from home. Lord knows where he got that at two, but he packed his bag and went out the door about two feet sat down and cried. The wife about lost it, bawling her eyes out. I couldn't help but laugh. It all worked out and I doubt he needs any counseling.

Yes, he was on the Guadalcanal episode of Dogfights!. He cracked me up..."I look over there and decide 'he a dead man'".
