Re: Quiz: Can You Name This Ship?

French destroyer of the 2610 tonnes type. Details are not clear enough to tell which one but based on the paint scheme I'd say it is either Le Malin, Le Fantasque, or Le Terrible after their refit in US hands in 1943.

Here is a nice looking ship to start off the day.

That is correct! Ship in picture is the Le Fantasque, and is after refit in the US.

Re: Quiz: Can You Name This Ship?

Looks to possibly be the Greek Armored Cruiser Georgios Averof.

Yes indeed. Visited it last month in Athens. Very cool ship.

I'm impressed!

Re: Quiz: Can You Name This Ship?

A Canadian Schooner of some sort, but does not look to be outfitted for fishing, but no pop guns either. To small to be a Q ship, not sure.

OK close enough, RCMPV St. Roch. First to sail the Northwest Passage West to East, Vancouver to Halifax (1940-1942).
Only second sailing of passage up to that time.
Manned by Mounties to "fly flag" and establish sovereignty of the Canadian Arctic.
In 1944 it sailed East to West in only 86 days.

Re: Quiz: Can You Name This Ship?

Does not match any Allied carrier configuration or Japanese style either, more digging required.

Did a search under WWII Carriers and learned something new. Italy had a carrier in the works and it was called the Regia Marina Aquila.

Correct. It was a conversion of the passenger liner Roma that began in 1941, but was not finished in time to take part in the war. It was scrapped in 1951.

Re: Quiz: Can You Name This Ship?

Yep- Italian had another carrier design as well, the Sparviero which would have been a conversion of the passenger ship Augustus. By the time Italy left the war the only work that had been done was the removal of the superstructure of Augustus.

Like Germany, Italy failed to appreciate the potential of aircraft carriers in time to complete any of its designs. Of course, even if both Italian carriers had been ready for action, they would probably have stayed in port for most of the war---along with Italy's battleships, cruisers, etc.-- rather than face the Royal Navy.
