HOLY SMAJOLY Horrido!! Your collection with cabinets is impressive! Thanks for posting! Jim, Horrido, and others who have modifed the Detolfs... do you do the extra welds yourself?

Its a very simple job but my place of work closed so I had to get an old friend to do them at his workshop. it only cost me a beer at the local pub, oh and a pie.

Excellent work on the cabinets, that's a lot of aircraft in those Ikea wonders.

As an aside, if one doesn't have access to a welder to put the extra bars on, you can also use 1/2 inch padded cable clamps on the four posts, angled in, to hold the extra shelves. I modified my cabinets a few months ago.

I took the clamps with me to the local Canadian Tire, picked up my screws, washers, and bolts, and viola. I have some pics somewhere, I'll post them if anyone's interested. They've held up just fine for the past several months.

Just another option, and you can move the shelves around if you want to mix up your collection.

Cheers,

SM

Good idea, for anyone without access to welding kit then this is a great alternative.

Re: How many planes in a Detolf ??

Hope this works, couldn't resize the pics down, hope they're not too big for upload, I'll try to fix them when I host them. I purchased the 1/4 inch rubber coated tube clamps at the local Brofasco. Don't know if they're in the States or not. A fastener supply store of some sort should have them. From there purchased the 1/2 inch bolts, with accompanying washers and nuts. Make sure you get the small washers so that the shelf can rest on the clamp on not the washer. I'm thinking a little dollop of modeller's putty might also come in handy to keep the sliding to a minimum. Haven't gotten that yet but I will. Hope this helps. Any other questions feel free to PM me, must get back to my winemaking now as my supplies are getting depleted.

No worries. Ech, just seen the dust on the shelves, better get cleaning. Darn basement. 6 Detolfs, wow, you will have a lot more room. I hope to pick up at least two more cabinets before I leave the smoggy south for God's country (aka Northwestern Ontario) in a few months. Believe it or not, we'll be looking for a house with at least one extra room for my collection, which will inivitably expand. Never heard of buying a house around a freakin' model collection before, but why not?? Aren't I a lucky guy?

Here's my two cabinets, I have two more shelves to put in, but with the upcoming move, I'll wait until we relocate. I'll make sure I have all my supplies and shelves before hand though, don't know what kind of access to glass and such I'll have come the fall. I only put one shelf extra between the welded shelves, but you could easily put two more shelves in and still display 1:72 scale WWII fighters on their stands (which I prefer). My wife thought it would look too cluttered with two extra, but I may still try it yet.
