| Who has grandads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam With nov 11 just days away, I thought I would see who's fathers or grandads or mothers for that matter may have fought in the second world war the first or nam or any war for that matter. I have 2 grandfathers who fought one in the first at vimmy and the other during the second in holland as a sherman tank driver. My gradfather who fought in the second meet a young holland girl and fell in love and married her and broght her back with him. She told me how strange it was coming to canada as we had things here she had never seen in her life. Plus she did not speak english very well so it took awhile for her to get use to it. So drop me a line and tell me about your family at war!! | |||||||||||||

| Re: Who has graddads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam My Grandfather (Mother side) was a Spitfire pilot stationed in England. Started the war as a mechanic during or right after BOB, and got his wings by putting in his hours flying the Spits he was repairing. I guess that was the incentive to fix it properly. Didn't fly combat until later in the War. He never liked to talk about his wartime experiences, but this is what I found out from his friends and other Vets that knew him. He would never talk about it with his family including his wife and kids. Guess he thought we would never understand. I remember as a kid asking him about the Spitfire propeller (a real one he mailed home during the War) in his basement, his eyes welled up and he just walked away. My mother told me to never ask him about the War ever again. I never did find out what it was that was so hard for him to talk about, but I know he lost almost all of his childhood friends during the war. Most of them went over together. Guess that's enough. Unfortunately he took his War stories to the grave with him. My great Uncle (actually my Grandfathers best friend since childhood, but I grew up thinking he was my uncle until his funeral) was a night fighter Mosquito pilot stationed in England | |||||||||||||

| Re: Who has graddads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam Grandfather from my mother's side served in the Soviet army. He had one of the more entertaining jobs, uncovering and deactivating mines (no, not in a penal battalion). Must of been pretty good at his job as he finished the war completely intact. The grandfather from my dad's side was a bit too young to be in the army but was captured by Germans during their rapid advance in the early part of the eastern front war. The city where he lived was called Voronezh. It's in the southwestern part of present day Russia, pretty close to eastern Ukraine. He was being taken back to Germany, most likely to be labor in a factory but was actually released (not sure how or why) and made it back to his town. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Who has graddads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam My grandfather served during WWI... he is now long gone. My father served in the Pacific during WWII (still living). My father's elder brother was a B-24 pilot in Europe... flew 32 combat missions (deceased). I have two uncles who served in the USAF during Korea (both living). I have two uncles who served in the army during Nam... one of these was a helicopter pilot (one living, once deceased). Sadly, my unlce who flew helicopters during Nam was killed in a training mission accident while fllying night maneuvers in 1981. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Who has graddads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam My grandfather served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in WW1. He had the Mons Star with Bar which meant that he was in France with the BEF from the outset. Only 10% of that gallant band survived the war. My grandfather was badly wounded but survived., he died in 1972. This weekend my father will proudly wear his father's medals on the right hand side as we go to a Remembrance ceremony to honour the fallen. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Who has graddads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam My late grandfather served from day one until the last one and beyond. Started out in artillery, then went to Air Force, and ended the war in the modern equivalent of special forces. Never forgot his stint in penal company. Red Army, Eastern Front. | Re: Who has grandads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam My dad served with his brothers in WWII as Marines in the 1st Marine Division. They all crewed an LVT (my dad was the driver). Shipped home after being badly wounded by a Japanese grenade on Peleliu. My father-in-law retired from the Air Force as an Air Chief Master Sergeant. He served pre-WWII through Vietnam. During WWII he was a bombardier and bomb assessment photographer in the ETO and MTO. He flew classified air missions during Korea through Vietnam. | |||||||||||||
