Re: Who has grandads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam

My dad served with his brothers in WWII as Marines in the 1st Marine Division. They all crewed an LVT (my dad was the driver). Shipped home after being badly wounded by a Japanese grenade on Peleliu.

My father-in-law retired from the Air Force as an Air Chief Master Sergeant. He served pre-WWII through Vietnam. During WWII he was a bombardier and bomb assessment photographer in the ETO and MTO. He flew classified air missions during Korea through Vietnam.

Hey Brett, one of my fave books is Marine At War by Russell Davis. He wrote about his Peleliu campaign in great detail, the book came out ca. 1960 and is a keeper.

My dad served in the USN in the Atlantic, the USS Iuka. I also had two uncles in the Pacific and another at Normandy.

Thumbs up Re: Who has grandads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam

My Dad volunteered for the Army during WWII, but was posted as 4-F, served 2 yrs. in the CCC, then started to work at Consolidated (now Lockheed Martin), assembling B-24's, along with my Mom who was one of the many "Rosie Riviters". Both are deceased. My Uncle was a Medic on Gauduacanal, Iwo Jima, Saipan, went through some tough times, but somehow made it through without a scratch, when he returned, he was what was called "Shell Shocked" then, now it is Post War Sindrom". Alcohol and cigs finally took their toll and did him in, but he lived a good life. His younger brother joined the AAF, and trained as a Tail gunner for B-17's and B-24's, fortunately never had to go into combat as it was near the end. Retired from USAF as Sr.MSgt. I Lost him 5 yrs ago.

My dad and 6 uncles all fought in Vietnam in the S. Vietnamese Military. Four uncles were pilots (1 F-5 Freedom Fighter, 1 O-2 Skymaster, 1 UH-1 Huey, 1 CH-47), one was in the army and one was a naval commander.

My dad was in the Special Forces (retired a Captain), working alongside the U.S. Army's Green Berets. He also wrote a couple of articles with mission photos for Green Beret Magazine in the 1967 (July & Sept. issues).

I'll be taking flowers and the U.S. flag to plant at this grave for Veteran's Day.

Re: Who has grandads or fathers who fought in the second world war or nam

My Mom served in the Royal Canadian Navy for the whole thing. She did spend some time in somewhere in the UK for a year or so. She did mention Bletchley Park a couple of times. Not completely sure of what she did. When I was a kid, if it wasn't flyin' I wasn't in to it(??!!) so I never really investigated. Now I suspect she may have had something to do with code. Not 100% sure though. Regrettably, she passed away in 1998 leaving a lot of stories untold.

I spent a short term in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserves back in the early 70s. No biggy.

The BP story is really fascinating, and the efforts from here probably provided the single most important intelligence source of the entire war.

Ooops!
