Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

Dogfights: THUNDERBOLT
The P-47 Thunderbolt, or Jug as it was known distinguished itself as one of the most lethal dogfighters of World War II- a classic warbird best remembered for its size, ruggedness, and reputation for protecting the pilot.

Finaly tonight we'll see the T-Bolts in action!

Yes, I can't wait. Have the brew a chillin' and the popcorn is ready to go at 9 PM.

This was a very good episode tonight I thought. Can you believe Ken Dahlberg is 90?! I mean, the guy looks great. If I could be half that sharp then...or now for that matter. Heck they all amaze me. I rewatched the episode with Risner and his F-86 today and he's so sharp and....well, funny. Seven years in the Hanoi Hilton! WOW! What inspiring stories.

Now back to the couch for baseball. Go Tigers!

Yeah, it's just amazing isn't it? If I get to that age, and that's a big 'if', I hope to be as sharp minded as those veterans themselves who've been through HELL and back!

Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

Saw bits of the Thunderbolt dogfight last night. Did anyone else notice, in one shot of the fuselage, the US star appeared to have a yellow circle surround? Ala Operation Torch? It was gone the next shot. Pretty nifty segment.

There was mention of the Germans forming Lufberry Circles. Is this technically correct? I thought Lufberry's (a late 1930's US tactic) were purely defensive circles used to keep enemy fighters from attacking others in the Circle. Yes, the 109's in the show were flying in circles, but it was to keep the Thunderbolt from gaining altitude... is this still a Lufberry, or no? Just curious.

Did I not see the liveries correctly, or does the national markings sometimes appear on both sides of the wing undersides?

No wonder Bob Johnson's "Jug" survived its battle with the FW-190. According to the narration, the latter was using nothing bigger than 7.62mm ammo, not the much larger caliber machine guns and cannon that most "Butcher Birds"carried. Huh? Still, this remains one of the classic examples of the P-47's unequaled ruggedness so I enjoyed watching this episode anyway.

According to the book the 190 was RTB I believe and out of cannon ammo when he encountered johnson... all he had left were BBs... lucky for Johnson.... The show version was a bit different from what I recall in Johnson's book -- seemed like a few liberties were taken to make the story a bit more dramatic, as if it wasn't dramatic enough....

I really wish someone would make one of Johnson's Jugs -- I think he had three different names for birds he flew, be cool to have a set. As one of the leading aces of the war it's a shocker no one's come out with a model yet

X2. I would love a couple of Johnson P-47s. Even better if it were an EI P-47 .

An EI version would be my number one choice, too...
