Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

There is a book on this operation I read a few years ago: The Last Flight of the Luftwaffe: The Fate of Schulungslehrgang Elbe, 7 April 1945 by Adrian Weir. Interesting book and interesting - as highlighted on the Kamikaze episode - the different approaches to a "suicide" mission. It certainly hightlights differences in culture I guess.

Yes, I have that book as well.

The only existing book referring to the highily secret suicidal Operation "Werewolf" mounted by the Luftwaffe on 7 April 1945. Almost overlooked by history until now and passed in silence even by the few surviving men who organized it or took part in it, the suicidal ramming operation comes at last to light by Adrian Weir in this fairly researched book. Contains every step of the operation from recruiting the 180 gallant volunteers who decided to give their lives in a last-attempt-strike against the U.S. bombers, to the very moment of the attack and the fate of the survivors. Still the book is somewhat biased, trying to favour the paranoic plan of his controvercial inspirator and decorated Luftwaffe officer, Oberst Hajo Herrmann. The author has done a very good job on the subject but misses several details of the operation that can be confirmed by other books such as the sick ambitions of Oberst Herrmann to preserve his name in history whatever the cost. Although among the 180 inexperienced young pilots fresh from the flying schools who took part in it were some decorated veterans, the author fails to give further valuable information about their previous record and feats, which could be easily obtained from other Luftwaffe sources. Still, as i said, it is the only existing book up to now on a hidden subject that even the survivors wouldn/t reveal its bitter details. A must for every Luftwaffe enthousiast.

Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

It seemed like they were just prompting him for filler about what it was like to be in a crashing B-24. Problem was, he's never been in a crashing B-24. The other thing that was annoying was the producers don't know the difference between an elevator and an aileron. This is a sign that the "experts" aren't reviewing the program when before its released, which is a sign of the endemic History Channel problems mentioned in the other thread.

That does not surprise me...

Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

Just saw the Jet vs Jet episode -- man, does that get your blood pumping or what? Those guys had some serious stones... can watch that Mig Alley stuff all day....

Corgi/HM, et al are really missing out on an opportunity here. If I saw an 800 number offer for a limited edition Ralph Par Sabre for $50 come up after that show, my wife would have to hide all of our phones!

I would like to see the show focus on some enemy aces, rather than just "american heroes" -- like to hear some stories of the Mig aces, German aces, etc. (And you got to just love the HC -- the ad for R. Johnson story in thunderbolts says "enemy 109" while showing a 190... d'oh)

I would love to hear 'enemy aces' tell stories about how they did and got it done when it comes to their own achievments in aerial battles with the allies as well. Am always open to the othersides' perspective and insights.

Dogfights: THUNDERBOLT
The P-47 Thunderbolt, or Jug as it was known distinguished itself as one of the most lethal dogfighters of World War II- a classic warbird best remembered for its size, ruggedness, and reputation for protecting the pilot.

Finaly tonight we'll see the T-Bolts in action!
