Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

The USS Laffey went on to live a long life. Besides the action off Okinawa she was present at Utah beach on D-Day and fought in Korea. She received a FRAM upgrade and remained in service into the late 1960s. She is now a museum ship in Charleston, North Carolina.

Here is a picture of a 1/1250 scale model of the Laffey as she would have looked in the early to mid 1960s:

Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

I was on the Laffey about a month ago, I spent the day at Patriots Point with it and the Carrier Yorktown. Very cool, and well done place.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Gee what a good little Nazi he was, the idiot.
- Shawn

On the morning of 4 April, Heinrich Ehrler flew his last sortie and achieved the last three of his 208 victories. After shooting down two B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, Ehrler's Me 262 was out of ammunition. Ehrler then flew his Me 262 straight into a B17 bomber, exploding both planes in the process. The action took place over Scharlibbe near Stendal."Theo. I have run out of ammunition. I'm going to ram this one. Good bye. We'll see each other in Valhalla." - Heinrich Ehrlers last transmission over the Squadron Radio Network before he rammed a B17 bomber, killing himself and exploding both aircraft.

Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

Hey Pappy, here's one example of an incident I recall reading at one time about a certain German fighter pilot ramming a B-17 bomber with his Me-262 jet. A Kamikaze-inspired last ditch effort, perhaps?

On the morning of 4 April, Heinrich Ehrler flew his last sortie and achieved the last three of his 208 victories. After shooting down two B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, Ehrler's Me 262 was out of ammunition. Ehrler then flew his Me 262 straight into a B17 bomber, exploding both planes in the process. There is a book on this operation I read a few years ago: The Last Flight of the Luftwaffe: The Fate of Schulungslehrgang Elbe, 7 April 1945 by Adrian Weir. Interesting book and interesting - as highlighted on the Kamikaze episode - the different approaches to a "suicide" mission. It certainly hightlights differences in culture I guess.

Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

So what's up with the "expert" whose greatest claim to fame is that he was on "Survivor"?

Good eyes Hoverbug! I was trying to figure out where I had seen that guy before and thought I must have seen him on another Military Channel show. Sure, he was (still is?) a fighter pilot, but it would be interesting to see his bona fides* before considering him an expert commentator.

* OK, Skunky, let's see what horrible pun/ double entendre you can make of this!

If you're talking about the F-14 pilot -- he's retired... and he did a military channel show about life on an aircraft carrier I believe, too...

That's the guy Pappy. Both Hover and I remember him from Survivor a few seasons ago. Don't get me wrong, he seems to be a decent guy and I applaud his service. I only hope that the program isn't using him only due to his (dubious) celebrity from appearing on Survivor.

It seemed like they were just prompting him for filler about what it was like to be in a crashing B-24. Problem was, he's never been in a crashing B-24. The other thing that was annoying was the producers don't know the difference between an elevator and an aileron. This is a sign that the "experts" aren't reviewing the program when before its released, which is a sign of the endemic History Channel problems mentioned in the other thread.
