Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

...the Luftwaffe pilot made several passes at him, each time coming alongside him to check him out before trying to shoot him down again.... Can you imagine what he must have felt as those shells torn into his plane and cockpit?

Yeah, he must've felt quite bewildered as to why the guy was both coming on to him and trying to kill him at the same time..

What's the one where the pilot (Johnson?) brought the P-47 home full of holes after running out of ammo and having his rival FW-190 pull up and salute him b4 trying to finish him off in one final coup des gras...
Come on Hist. CH!

Are they just trying to honor/include different services? Do you think that available interviews plays a major role? Some of the participants in the really amazing dogfights we've all read about are, ahem, not available for comment.

Robert Johnson's experience with the Fw190 is coming up in the episode called 'Thunderbolt!'.

Skunkster, I am horrified by what you suggest, yet am greatly entertained by the thought.

So what's up with the "expert" whose greatest claim to fame is that he was on "Survivor"?

Re: "Dogfights!: Season 2 on the History Channel

I saw the Kamikaze's episode and thoroughly enjoyed it. I spoke mhackl tonight and he said that Corgi has produced two versions of the Zero for the mentioned Japanese ace that escorted the first Kamikaze mission. That being said I can't remember the part numbers he told me or even the pilots name for that matter.

Great! I didn't know that. It was just an example though. What I meant was I think there are too many really great and true "dogfight" stories to be covering raming stories and stories that are mainly about ships this early in the series (some were last year) or season.

I agree with you Parsig (though the german portion of the kamikaze episode was news to me -- and very compelling). I thought the death of the japanese navy and sink the bismarck episodes from last year were stretching it -- particularly as there are som many good pure dogfight stories left to tell.

Hey Pappy, here's one example of an incident I recall reading at one time about a certain German fighter pilot ramming a B-17 bomber with his Me-262 jet. A Kamikaze-inspired last ditch effort, perhaps?

On the morning of 4 April, Heinrich Ehrler flew his last sortie and achieved the last three of his 208 victories. After shooting down two B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, Ehrler's Me 262 was out of ammunition. Ehrler then flew his Me 262 straight into a B17 bomber, exploding both planes in the process. The action took place over Scharlibbe near Stendal.

"Theo. I have run out of ammunition. I'm going to ram this one. Good bye. We'll see each other in Valhalla." - Heinrich Ehrlers last transmission over the Squadron Radio Network before he rammed a B17 bomber, killing himself and exploding both aircraft.
