Jolly Green

When are we going to see one of these historic helicopters. They fought and pulled many pilots out of the jungles. "So that others may live", was the motto.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

These were the CSAR birds, right?

I'd like a HH-3E "Jolly Green Giant" in 1/48!

Re: Jolly Green

Thanks. I think that it would be a very important part of any one's collection that collects Vietnam era aircraft. It would also go great with the skyraider.

Question Re: Jolly Green

Too right! Didn't the Skyraiders escort the Jolly Greens?

Re: Jolly Green

Yeah the did. The "Sandy" or Skyraiders would go in and draw fire to see where the guns were, then they would take out the guns, and only then would the Jolly Green come in. My uncle was pulled out of the jungle by a Jolly Green and a Sandy that was running low on fuel, but would not leave him until he knew that he was safe inside the Jolly.

Re: Jolly Green

He was in a H-3 that he had to crash land. He had rescued some pilots , but took hits while doing it. They couldn't make it home, He crash landed in the jungle. A team of a Skyraider and a Jolly Green came to get them out, and weather became an issue. They had to leave my uncle and his co-pilot in the jungle overnight, and return in the morning. My uncle said the the skyraider had been flying so low, that he could read the numbers on the cowling. I think he said is was something like 510 or something like that. The next morning, as soon as the sun was rising, he could her the Jolly Green coming in. The Sandy was there covering the Jolly Green which took sometime to clear out the enemy fire. My uncle said that he never saw one aircraft fire that much ordanance. As he was coming up the cable of the helicopter, the skyraider flew past, and he said he would never forget seeing that same 510 on the cowling as he came up. Very cool story. When I took my Uncle to the NMUSAF a few months ago, he was his normal self all the way through the WWI, WWII, Korea, and even most of the Vietnam stuff, but when we got the the A-1, he stppoed dead in his tracks, and told me that story for the first time ever.

Re: Jolly Green

I think this is a great idea. The Jolly Green Giants played a key role in the Vietnam conflict. They completed many, many highly dangerous missions, a lot of times getting shot down themselves while trying to rescue others.
