"But when you have to sell, lets say 1000 of each paint scheme and you need to make a minimum of 7 schemes to break even, what do you do with the probable 500 of each variant that is left over? The non serious collector might buy one and maybe 2 if they are lucky but not enough people would buy what I would call a squadron of them."

I generally agree with this, but I also think there are ways around this. If companies really need to sell 7000 models at normal prices to make it worth while, they could also sell 3500 or 5000 at slightly inflated prices to get the same profit. I would rather see that done than not have a P-61. It also seems like some people are willing to pay more if they know a model is a limited edition or has a certificate. The P-61 runs could be set up similarly to how HM is doing thier buffalo releases, where some are not limited and others are limited with certificates. That could cut down on the production run and create equal profits.

Good point there slammin, maybe a limited edition with cert higher priced version might just make the figures work, maybe!

Trust me, all these points were examined and discussed and I think it just got to the point where they were spending so much time on trying to make this work that other things were being neglected and the big boss said move on for now. Time is money.

Thanks Hawk. I know you've been trying and I know that HM has looked at this issuse from many angles. It just seems that with the amount of interest on this board for this mold there should be a way of making it work. I'm one of those really hoping someone makes this work.

Re: P-61 Black Widow

If there were enough people on the forums buying as many as you then there probably wouldn't be a problem. But when you have to sell, lets say 1000 of each paint scheme and you need to make a minimum of 7 schemes to break even, what do you do with the probable 500 of each variant that is left over? The non serious collector might buy one and maybe 2 if they are lucky but not enough people would buy what I would call a squadron of them.
Or even if they sell every single model from the first 4 releases but by now people are saying they have enough black planes and they don't buy any more, guess who is left holding the bag and the bag ain't full of money?
I think being relatively new to the game Hobby Master is and has to play it a bit safer for now and put the long shot on the back burner for now. If it were my company I know I would be doing this. If the bigger companies want to make one and it doesn't pan out they probably can afford to drop a million or so and still survive but when you are new and trying to prove yourself to the financial people I think there is a tendency to go with the safe bet. This is just my own personal opinion, not that of anyone else.

I hear ya, and I appreciate your efforts.

Re: P-61 Black Widow

Best thing to do is let the subject rest for a while and then come back with all guns firing at some future date.

Re: P-61 Black Widow

I guess our only hope is with Eagles making they are going to make, and maybe a version from Franklin Mint.

I wouldn't pin your hopes on EI either. If the next project is the Thunderbolt, I would bet we won't see it until 2009/2010. Based on current production rate, the next project after that won't be realized until 2012/2013 and, if I recall correctly, at one time it was surmised that a Hawker Typhoon is next in the queue. If this is so... then a P-61 (again at current production rate) wouldn't be realized until 2015/2016. At this point, it may be that Franklin Mint would have released a P-61 which will likely "fail to inspire" (in Skunky's immortal words), and the speculation of an EI released Black Widow will be moot and I won't care anymore.

Then again, EI could ramp up their production/project rate. However, that doesn't seem likely to me.

Re: P-61 Black Widow

JP, I've often wondered if diecast manufacturers feel the same way about some models. "If they want one that bad, they'll build a plastic version of it at home..."
