Yes it was, and at the Battle of Midway as well.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Best Twin-Engined Bombers of WW II

Was the B-26 ever used in the PTO?

If my memory is accurate I read that four of them tried a low level torpedo attack on an element of the Japanese fleet during The Battle of Midway. Result: Two B-26s shot down by Zeros, no hits. Beyond this I haven't heard much about B-26 use in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

Between Rabual and Lae they flew 164 missions and held their own against the Zero on unescorted missions. The 22nd Bomb Group and the 38th Bomb Group both flew the'26 in the PTo starting in April 5,1942.

Re: Best Twin-Engined Bombers of WW II

I think one could make the case - based on the technical info alone for the Mosquito. Speed, bomb load, range, etc.

I would make my case for the Mosquito based first and foremost on the fact that using this aircraft (with a crew of 2) put less airmen's lives at risk (in harm's way) to carry out the needed mission.

The Mosquito was versatile enough to do just about any job with less risk of airmens' lives vs. the others that have been mentioned in this thread.

(I don't think crew risk has been mentioned by anyone else in this discussion. If I missed this as a factor, my apologies to whoever mentioned it previously. )

And of course the Mosquito bombers of the Light Night Striking Force could each carry a 4,000 lb bomb load to Berlin with a crew of 2, yet that overrated B-17 thingy with a crew of 12 carried less than 4,000 lb to Berlin
