Cool Re: Best Twin-Engined Bombers of WW II

Hmm, the Pe-2. A nice choice as it never entered my mind until you suggested it. I would still go with a few others ahead of it but I would put it in my top 5. Here is a bit of footage for your enjoyment on this bird:

Got to say that the first thing that sprang to mind was the Mosquito! Geez, even you Yanks used it! How often does that happen?

Re: Best Twin-Engined Bombers of WW II

The Mosquito carried a 57MM Molins gun which did not have the hitting power of the 75 MM cannon. The Mosquito was a superb aircraft in the light bomber, and fighter/bomber role but IMHO the B-25 was the most effective medium bomber.

You say the mosquito a light bomber , but it still carried the same bomb load to Berlin as a B17 witch is more than what the B-25 could do
Your right about the Mosquito carried a 57MM Molins gun , but was dropped in favour of the eight rockets

And few things were as versatile as a Mossie. What would the bombing campaign have been without the Pathfinders and daring raids? The PR role, anti-shipping, nightfighter? There were many good twin engined bombers but the Mossie was more than just a bomber!

For true multirole (wide ranging) requirements you can't beat:
1) Mosquito
2) Beaufighter
3) Ju-88

Re: Best Twin-Engined Bombers of WW II

I think one could make the case - based on the technical info alone for the Mosquito. Speed, bomb load, range, etc.

I would make my case for the Mosquito based first and foremost on the fact that using this aircraft (with a crew of 2) put less airmen's lives at risk (in harm's way) to carry out the needed mission.

The Mosquito was versatile enough to do just about any job with less risk of airmens' lives vs. the others that have been mentioned in this thread.

(I don't think crew risk has been mentioned by anyone else in this discussion. If I missed this as a factor, my apologies to whoever mentioned it previously. )

Was the B-26 ever used in the PTO?

Don't do what BDE tells you to do. Do what BDE would want you to do.
