Re: Ugliest Monoplanes of WW II

Shawn, That is not a opinion. "IT"S A WISECRACK'. If you don't like anything that is British say so. You have indicated that sentiment on previous posts so Clear the wide the blue yonder and tell us what you really think.

Um gee, didn't mean to shift the universe off its axis. I don't have much against the British, afterall I like Posh Spice too. But if taking the p*ss from you Spitfire lovers is going to cause all this disorder, I doubt I can nominate any plane. For I wouldn't want the German fans or Italian or Japanese guys after me either. And lets not mention the Russian mafia. So take make amends I'll go with the Brewster Buffalo. Its all American and butt ugly.

Hey Shawn we are all different and have different likes and dislikes, if you dont like Spits its OK no problem.

Just to show this point Lorraine thinks the Twin Mustang is the coolest plane in the world, weird eh.

How about the flying barrel, Polikarpov 1-16 ,now thats real ugly?

God Bless America.

No worries. I dont have anything against the Spitfire. I have three, albeit flown by Yanks . I just can't get all weak in the knees over it

Re: Ugliest Monoplanes of WW II

Shawn, I once had the glorious pleasure and priviledge of sitting in a Spitfire. It was the real thing with 5 kills to its credit.

I was able to sit there while the pilot finished his checking of the airframe and cleaning it up a little.
Shawn it was one of the great moments of my life.

To sit in a Spitfire that had been in action many times was the ???????????????????? Oh heck how do I put that feeling into words?

I spoke to the pilot and told him how grateful I was and that he would never know how much the opportunity meant to me.

He said ,Jim I have seen many grown men reduced to tears after the experience, there is something about this plane that affects people that way.
I think its the history of the plane and the fact that it was so important in the defeat of the Nazis and lets face it its just so beautiful, it flys like a dream and never lets you down.

This pilot has over a hundred types in his log and told me the Spitfire is the best of them all and is his favourite plane.

I would like to add that one of the things that is so good about the Warbird aviation scene is that most of the pilots and ground crew willingly give their time to us enthusiasts, I am sure at times it must be a toil of a pleasure, so if any of you chaps are reading this then thank you on behalf of all us crazy people.

God Bless America.

Jim -
I was a wee lad ( 12-13yrs old ) when I got to sit in a P-51D at an airshow. I impressed the owner by reciting specs where others only touched the prop and moved on. I too heard the sounds of battle and rattle and hum of the engine. To each their own.

Yup thats an enthusiast for you!

And there is no known cure.

BTW Lorraines favourite part of the Duxford show is when the Mustangs beat up the airfield, she loves the scream that comes from
the gun barrels when the Mustang swoops and then pulls up.

I will admit that its near the top of my favourite moments.

Re: Ugliest Monoplanes of WW II

That is one funny looking plane i'll tell ya.
What in the world were they thinking putting the cockpit on the side like that??
JP

It was a recon platform, so the idea was to give the observer an unobstructed field of view, and fire for reconaissance missions. Apparantly the thing flew okay, but the old adge, if it looks right it flies right made the luftwaffe reconsider, so they purchased the Fw 189 instead.

Great stuff about the Spit Jim, I'd have loved to sit in an ace machine. Same with the Stang Shawn.

You know its hard to say which has the greater effect on a diving pass. Our local airshow has a P-47 and P-51 that always shows up. And while the Mustang is awesome, there is something about the P-47 that gets the hairs up on the back of my neck. Maybe its because I know it was the primary US Jabo. That and the grumbling radial engine.
