Re: Recommending Planes For Corgi's 2008 Diecast Lineup

You bet! Now, what if Argentina had succeeded in purchasing the Vulcans it tried to obtain in 1981? How would that have affected the War? I'm know I'm straying off topic, but it's an interesting "what if" scenario...

BTW, Happy Birthday!

Did they - that's the first I've heard of that. Can anyone else confirm?

Re: Recommending Planes For Corgi's 2008 Diecast Lineup

I'm trying to find my reference for this. IIRC, during 1981, the UK was in the process of converting to the Tornado and trying to upgrade their sub based nuclear deterrent. The Vulcans, as a result, were (originally) scheduled to be replaced sometime around 1982. After the coup that brought Galtieri to power in 1981, as I understand it, inquiries were made about the availability of the soon to be surplus bombers.
Now, I don't know what the state of UK-Argentine relations was just prior to the Argentine invasion. I do know that the UK has sold weapons to Argentina a few times since WW2; Lincolns, Meteors and Canberras come to mind. And, with the Lincoln, a precedent was set for the sale of long range bombers to Argentina. So, an Argentine request along this line was not totally unreasonable.
However, IMHO, I don't think the UK took this inquiry seriously. It is along the same lines as the request that the Shah of Iran made to purchase SR-71s during the 1970's. Even though we were selling him F-14's (with Phoenix missiles) and some ships, and were going to allow him to purchase F-16s, we were not going to sell him anything as advanced as the Blackbird.
Later events confirmed the wisdom of ignoring (or turning down) these inquiries.

Yip, the Vulcans nearly had Argentine roundals.

Re: Recommending Planes For Corgi's 2008 Diecast Lineup

[quote=Rush104;73513]Going down another path, here's a suggestion for a couple of additions to the Falklands War line, to complement the Black Buck Vulcan and Victor, and the Sea Harrier- how about an Argentine Canberra? Corgi already has the mold, all it would take is a new paint job and decals (maybe some different accessories). And, the Canberra did see some action during that war, although it didn't get the headlines that the A-4's and Super Etendards received.
Another possible Argentine aircraft (using an existing mold) is the C-130. I believe these were used for maritime patrol, trying to find the British fleet, since the SP-2H Neptunes were pretty much retired by the time of the war.

The Argentine Hercs were used as tankers and to resupply the troops on the Falklands. Maritime Patrol was undertaken by the Lockheed Electra, and one can not forget the Boeing 707, which was intercepted by the unarmed RAF Nimrod. A couple of Canberra's were shot down and the Argentines also used the Chinook and Sea King.

Dont forget that the RAF trained the Argentine air force pilots.

Well, there's still plenty of Hunters and Lightnings that can be made. I'm also hoping for a Meteor F.4 at some point.

Cool Re: Recommending Planes For Corgi's 2008 Diecast Lineup

Going along with the Hudson/Ventura, how about a PV-2 Harpoon?
Also, for WW2, the Curtiss Helldiver and the PB4Y Privateer.
Postwar suggestions, I agree with Planenutsfrog's choices. I'd also recommend Corgi to further round out the RAF/RN combat types, with the Venom/Sea Venom, Vickers Valiant, Sea Vixen, and (hoping against hope) the Supermarine Scimitar and Swift.

The Ventura and Harpoon are derivatives of the model 18 "Lodestar", while the Hudson is a variant of the smaller model 14 "Super-Electra". So, it's not possible to make all types with a single mould I'm afraid...

I remember reading that HM is planning to make the SB2C Helldiver.

I totally support the suggestions of the Sea Vixen and Venom, but would definitely drop the Scimitar and Swift, in favor of the Sea hawk !

What about the Beaufort btw ? (if GA makes the Beaufighter...)

Re: Recommending Planes For Corgi's 2008 Diecast Lineup

Ah the Javelin, way ahead of its time that one, if they had carbon fibre in those days it would have been a real winner.
it was just to clumsy in the wings and never really made the grade. too many restrictions on its capability.

Having said that ,a great deal was learned from it and put to good use, and it looks a cool bird.

Poor Javelin, it suffered from the same aerodynamic flaws as the Scimitar !

Built like a tank, it flew like one...

Why on earth did the RAF not choose the superior Sea Vixen ?!

Even the "Armée de l'Air" would have adopted the DH110, had the Vautour IIN been a failure.

The French version was to be produced by Sud-Aviation (like the Vampire FBV, Mistral and Aquilon previously...).
