Re: Worst war movies you have seen.

I've always liked "A Bridge Too Far". Great cast (Sean Connery, Gene Hackman, James Caan, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Ryan Oneal, Maxilmilian Schell, Elliot Gould, Robert Redford (ugh) and even Cliff Claven himself.....John Ratzenberger! Also, Sir Richard Attenborough directed the film.

I remember being a kid in the 70's loving this film with it's awesome airborne scenes, armored vehicles and great story. I even had the official movie book for ABTF.

My interest in this movie has been renewed because I just visited the Netherlands and visited the museum(s) at Overloon where there was a major armor/infantry battle immediately following Operation Market Garden. BTW, great museum (Marshall Museum) with tons of equipment (WWII & Cold War), National War and Resistence Museums were very good also but wish there were more things in English. While my fiance and I were strolling around the park which surrounds the Museum(s), we ran into a platoon of Dutch soldiers on exercise? and exchanged Dutch military rations for American gum. Nice bunch, those Dutch soldiers!

Sorry about going off topic, but IMHO "A Bridge Too Far" one of my top war movies......after "Pearl Harbor"(just kidding!).

Re: Worst war movies you have seen.

I agree that Pearl Harbor wasn't as bad as some people say and romance usually makes it into most movies somehow these days, but I prefer Tora Tora Tora.

SPR is still my favourite WWII movie but my all round best war movie is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Yes I know it's not a movie that usually springs to mind when war movies are discussed but the battle scenes in it were terrific imo. One of my fav scenes being in The Two Towers where the Wargs (they're like giant wolves/hyenas) and their Orc riders clash with the Rohan cavalry.

I didn't care for this movie because there were no Americans in it....

Re: Worst war movies you have seen.

Totally agree with the John Wayne sentiments.....He was alright as a cowboy, but as a G.I. ...I don't know who was a bigger over-actor - The Duke or Van Johnson.I would rather listen to William Shatner sing "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" for two solid hours than spend that time watching any John Wayne war flick.....

HEY! STOP DISSIN' THE DUKE! ALL O' YUZ!

In Harm's Way is one of the greatest war movies ever made... loads better than that sorry excuse known as Top Gun.

Code Talkers was definately the worse.

Top Gun is second.

Any Kate Beckinsale movie gets a pass from me. I just like lookin' at her.

Re: Worst war movies you have seen.

Actually, since his real name was Marion, I'm surprised he wasn't known as "The Duchess"

Re: Worst war movies you have seen.

The worst aviation flicks that the Duke have made I absolutely hate are: Flying Tigers, Flying Leathernecks and Jet Pilot - they're real stinkers except for the warbirds in them, imho.

Re: Worst war movies you have seen.

This is turning into a real John Wayne hatefest.
Growing up over the pond, the Duke represented all things American to us. Tough, brash, adventurer, his movies gave us views of the Wild West, Americans at their finest, a young country full of hope and possibilities, ...don't give up the ship, ...hang in there buddy I'll get through and bring back help,.. type of plots.

I like/liked him and his movies. Lots of cheesy stuff seen in them nowadays but let's not lose sight of the good bits also.
Don't forget that a couple of generations of women around the world swooned when the Duke came on the screen...
He must have offered something, or his legend would not continue and this conversation would not be happening.
