US designers...

just win the prize of "terror" over their German competitors I think.

Not only the shape of many US planes ( P61, Corsair, P38, Hellcat, P47, P40, to name a few...) made them look dangerous, but they were generally bigger than their opponents and so strong they sometimes seemed invulnerable !

But the large German selection is pretty close : Ju 87, Hs 129, Me 109, 110, 210, 410, Do 335, He 219, 177...

Not bad either : Beaufighter, Typhoon, Tempest, Defiant, Whirlwind, Barracuda, Firefly...

Brrrrr !!!...

Re: Scariest Looking Planes of WW II

Looking at the awesome firepower of four 20MM cannons & four .50 MGs and the damage they could do to an enemy aircraft it should have been called the Black Widow(maker)!! P-61 size, power, and armament = scary!

Re: Scariest Looking Planes of WW II

One of the scaryest planes I have ever seen is the Me110 nightfighter at Hendon museum.

The lighting is turned down every hour for a BoB and Blitz film to be shown in the museum.

The Me110 seems to be lurking in the gloom and looks very spookie.

When you sit and consider the number of bombers those planes shot down it makes the whole scene very eerie.

I wish I had a photo to post then I could show you all what I mean.

I agree that anything spitting lead at you should be downright scary but I reckon the radial engined birds and the inlines with big chins like the P40 and Typhoon/Tempest just look rude because they present a bigger head on profile if you were on the ground or in the air.

Jim, I think your favourite food must be fish& chips with Mushy Ps. Is that what you had on your 40th birthday?.

Hmmm, good point, ZS-VAN. Those big howling chin scoops must look pretty scary bearing down on you...

Are you kidding?...Jim turned 40 about the same time as Winston Churchill. How could he possibly remember what he had to eat on his birthday???
