Lightbulb Re: If you had the resources to start your own diecast company

I would mainly focus on French aircraft (of course !), and create 3 ranges : 1/72 Prop driven, 1/72 Jets and 1/144 heavies.

My goals : Original subjects in a quality at least equal to HM's for a price tag inferior to Corgi's.

First toolings :

In the 1/72 "prop" range : D520 (French, German, Italian markings), MS406/F+W D3801(French, Swiss, Finnish markings), Potez 631/ 63-11.

In the 1/72 "jet" range : SO4050 Vautour II A/B/N (France/Israel), Super-Mystère B2 (France/Israel), Mirage III/V/50/Nesher/Cheetah (France, Israel, Australia, Swizerland, Belgium, South Africa, etc...)

1/144 range : Breguet 1150 Atlantic (France, NL, Germany, Italy), C160 Transall (France, Germany, South Africa), Nord 2501 Noratlas (France, Germany, Israel, Greece, Portugal).

The 1/144 planes would be even more detailed than Hogan's 1/200 P2J or Herpa's 1/160 JU52, with clear canopies and windows, detailed interiors, etc...

Re: If you had the resources to start your own diecast company

I'd go Dutch first. Manufacturers and a/c and helo's. Scale 1:72.
I'm not the biggest nut out here, but I think this could be a surprisingly extensive range.

Don't know about the market for this, but it is a dream isn't it?

Perhaps that in the longer run there's a (not too) similar country which deserves my focus too...

It has been mentioned before, but airfield facilities and vehicles would be a second line. Would be a larger market too...

Dreaming on...

Can we try with real bullets now?

Post Re: If you had the resources to start your own diecast company

I would probably need the recources of a Russian oil billionaire to finance my choices as the market would be impossibly small for the types I have in mind being mostly British jets from the 40s through to the 60s. http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/contents.html
1. TSR2 (Duxford) 1:72 scale ( would undertake customer commisions for what if schemes) non limited issue ***
2. De Havilland Sea Vixen 1:72
3. Gloster Javelin 1:72
4. Supermarine Scimitar 1:72
5. Hawker Sea Hawk 1:72
6. Supermarine Swift 1:72
7. Avro Vulcan 1:72
8. Handley Page Victor 1:72
9. Vickers Valiant 1:72
10. Avro Arrow 1:72 ***
11. BAE Nimrod 1:72

A comprehensive range of ground personnel & support vehicles & equipment would be available in 1:72, 1:48 &1:32 scales, I am sure to think of more but these would be enough to go on with.

Pse Nimrod, do warn me as soon as you take pre-orders, I'd like the Sea Vixen, Sea Hawk and Scimitar...

Re: If you had the resources to start your own diecast company

I'd make 1:72 scale armor and helos. There are so many modern vehicles that have been left out by diecast manufacturers (but not the model kit manufacturers).

Re: If you had the resources to start your own diecast company

List you put out almost begs for a Monocoupe, Stinson Voyager, and a Piper Cub. (You already have a Cub, how about the Piper Pacer then.).
Better yet, a Bellanca Cruisair Senior!

Ooooo .... Bellanca Cruisair.... mmmmmm....

Re: If you had the resources to start your own diecast company

I'd go 1/48, high end, lot's o' research and quality control.

I would start with the TBD Devastator of VT-8, Lt. Cmmdr. Waldron's twin-fifty ship. The Midway battle has a lot a cache with the public and the TBD was a major player. Tack on an accurate model 21 Zero as this plane will be the only Japanese diecast purchase for many.

I would try to sell my stockholders on the feasability of a B-29/B-50 line. I would have to figure out who would buy these and where would they display them? Maybe the major market would be the smattering of museums around the world?

I would also produce a Ki-61 Hein, in the variety of schemes illustrated in publications throughout the years: silver, mottled silver/green, dark green, wavy green over silver etc.

For England, a Typhoon would be produced, as well as BofB-era Spitfires, Watts propellers thru Mk II versions as a start.

For Germany, a Do 17 family would be offered, followed by an He 219 Owl.

I also think a tidy range of float/seaplanes would be offered, the Kingfisher, Ar 95, The Pete, and Swordfish.

Thumbs up Re: If you had the resources to start your own diecast company

Hmmmmm, what are my dream airframes? What are my dream periods?
I'm dying for a diecast 1/72 scale F-105 Thuderchief, but if I were going to be doing an entire line of models, I'd probably focus on something a little different. I've always thought it would be neat to match classic GA airframes to existing diecast passenger cars. And because most of my diecast cars are 1/43 scale, I'd do a line of GA airframes in the highly unusual scale of 1/43!

The line would include (in order of appearance):
Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing
North American/Ryan Navion
Spartan Executive 7W
Cessna C-190/C-195
Stinson SR-9/SR-10 Reliant
Grumman G-21 Goose
Globe/Temco Swift
Piper J-3 Cub
Cessna C-120/C-140
Piper PA-28 Cherokee/Arrow ("Hershey bar" wing & tapered wing)
ERCO 415-C Ercoupe
Cessna C-172 Skyhawk
Piper PA-22 Tri-Pacer
Cessna C-337 Skymaster ("Huff and Puff")
...

Oh, I could go on and on. With a level of cabin and engine detail to match 1/43 cars from Minichamps, Kyosho and such.

While I'm dream'n, I'd throw in a line of 1/87 ("HO scale") diecast airliners: Connie (standard and "Super"), DC-3/4/6/7, and flying boats, just for starters, to market to the model train crowd. Again, ideally, the level of detail would match the brass locomotives and rolling stock collectors vie for.

PH-LKK,
You have me drooling now. NOBODY has done those up. North American/Ryan Navion, Grumman Goose -- whoa! There is a whole new avenue of collecting just in your line up especially given the level of detail you want. I like your ideas for the Civil Airliners too. Advice: Write a business plan, talk to some manufacturers then get some funding (a lottery win may be easier to do!). Bingo! Customer No. 1 right here.

Thought of another good one and that would be a Howard DGA-15.
