Southern California burning!

To fellow forum members who live down there, I hope and pray all you folks are alright and safe. I just had a phone call from my daughter who goes to San Diego State that they were
evacuated and their classes had been cancelled for the whole week. Please give us some updates on the fires? Thanks and God bless....

I'll echo that sentiment, just watched the fires on the news. Quite incredible to see such devastation. Thoughts are with those affected.

Re: Southern California burning!

San Diego area is getting the worst of it. Today might be worse than yesterday with higher temperatures and winds. Fires up in the mountains at Lake Arrowhead were also eating homes yesterday and I'm sure last night. Here where I live it is calm with orangish light from all the smoke. I'm 35 miles east of downtown LA and two miles from the foothills and have fires to the south, east, and west of me. No danger to me or to most of Los Angeles though- it is the hillside and canyon areas that are in danger for the most part.

Re: Southern California burning!

This year - with the fires in CA - it just seems to be MUCH bigger and worse than the typical yearly wildfires (not that those aren't as tragic to individuals effected).

Thoughts and prayers go out to the residents of CA - and a special prayer for those on this board and their families/friends who may be effected.

You ain't kidding. Southern California's annual wildfire season (late autumn-early winter) is the result of a nasty combination: (1) lots of dry vegetation and (2) hot, dry Santa Ana winds that whip in from the Great Basin, further drying everything out and fanning any flames. The Santa Anas we've been having since Saturday are very strong, and last winter was the driest on record, so all the vegetation is tinder dry.

As 1250ships writes above, the most threatened zones are those near forests / scrublands. And like 1250ships, even though I'm removed from the fires, I can see orange smoke on the horizon. Los Angeles' Daily News ran a banner headline today, Hell on Earth, and that's what it seems like.

All morning I've been listening to the radio, and stories of people who've just lost everything. It's devastating. If you can spare a few dollars, now might be a good time to donate to the Red Cross or another worthy relief organization, and count your blessings.

I'll be sending donations of cloths and money to the Red Cross this week. Thank you for reminding.

Re: Southern California burning!

Friend just flew out of LA yesterday, said that the fire sites were incredible to see from the plane.
Valley where Captain Kirk did so much good work, (you know the one) was also part of the area devastated.

Re: Southern California burning!

Last night on the news they reported that one of the fires at Lake Arrowhead which is to the east of Los Angeles in the mountains had gotten so dangerous (it was crowning in the trees) that the firefighters and police had just pulled back. Reporter said they were urging anyone still in that area to get out and that if you were there and called 911 for help no one was coming in after you. That is about as bad as it gets. This morning they were showing helicopter shots of house after house burning up there.

As bad as it is at Arrowhead it is worse down south. In San Diego numbers vary but at least 1000 homes have been destroyed.

Only good news is that the winds seem to be a bit less today which is better than what was forecast.

Re: Southern California burning!

I live in Orange County but am in the Netherlands right now when I was the news on BBC Worldwide. Wow, this time of year is usually bad but the images are seem to much more devastating this time around! I also work near one of the areas affected but was notified by my coworkers that everything was alright....prayers to everyone back home!

Re: Southern California burning!

My aunt has been out there for years now bragging that it's so warm and beautiful while I'm here in MI freezing my butt off 6 months a year.

Seems there is a price to pay for all that sunshine, though I don't think now is the time to call and say I told ya so. Gee aunty, sorry about the house.
