Here's an interesting article

Here's something interesting- the Air Force is exploring the possibility of buying Airbus A-380's.

Re: Here's an interesting article

I don't think it will happen. First off, the Airbus could not replace the C-5 as they are really different aircraft. The airbus has no ramp for vehicles and so on. Also "When the last Airbus is parked in the desert, the crew will ride home in a 737."

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

. . . Also "When the last Airbus is parked in the desert, the crew will ride home in a 737."

Ain't that the truth, eh?!

Re: Here's an interesting article

Don't think the Air Force would go off shore for a replacement, too many jobs at stake here.

Re: Here's an interesting article

I tend to agree with all of the above statements. However, considering how the C-17 has morphed over the years from a "tactical" airlifter into a "strategic" one; and AMC's love affair with the aircraft (at the expense of the C-5), I would have to say anything is possible.

Re: Here's an interesting article

I could see them using it as a transport, but not to replace the C-5. The U.S. Army just bought the Eurocopter EC-145.

Re: Here's an interesting article

I
"When the last Airbus is parked in the desert, the crew will ride home in a 737."

And when the last 737 retires the crew will ride home on a NW DC-9!!!

Have to say though I'm a great fan of the A320 series. It was really ground breaking when released. and performance and economy wise blew the 737 (300/400/500) of the day away.

As to the A-380 being a C5 replacement - No way. The structure would need a complete re-design to be able to handle those sought of loads. You might as well start from scratch. The 747F would still be a far better basis.

Ooops!
