ABC Nightly News Story on P-38 "Glacier Girl"

At the end of this evening's ABC evening news, they ran a preview of tomorrow night's news stories and said they would be doing a story on the recovered P-38 "Glacier Girl". So it will be on the Friday evening ABC news at 5:30 p.m. here in Kansas, but check your local listing for your U.S. time if you want to see it.

Re: ABC Nightly News Story on P-38 "Glacier Girl"

Thanks for the heads up. I believe the story was aired in the Discovery Channel a few years ago, and ABC Network owns the Discovery Channel so it might be showing the same documentary. I'll still stay tuned and watch.

Its a brilliant film if its the one shown over here. Ask yourself how you would have felt trying to get the old girl out and all that ice creaking and groaning overhead. They were brave people and I take my hat off to them all.

Re: ABC Nightly News Story on P-38 "Glacier Girl"

I'm amazed that it wasn't crushed under all that ice (like the B17 that they tried to get out as well)

I also wonder how much of the plane that they removed is actually flying today, and how much they had to replace. (Probably a bit like the excutioners axe - It';s had 3 new heads and 10 new handles, but it's still the same old axe!)

Ooops!

It was a mess. Much of it is new, more than 40% of the structure and many of the mechanical systems (hydraulic plumbing, wiring harnesses, etc.). Cost-wise it didn't make any sense to recover, but it was a neat story and the recovery team put so much into from the outset, there was no way they were going to stop.

True but we now have another P38 in the air.

I love crazy people, they make life interesting.

I can only imagine the pilot - Steve Hinton was very exuberant the day he took her up in the air!
