ebay fickleness

Ebay prices have been so up and down recently -- it's tougher to figure out a good price for a piece of diecast it seems than a barrel of crude oil...

case in point:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130164220010&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003

Why in the world would anyone pay $80 for this model (and the auction's still live)... it's available at retail all sorts of places for less. (perhaps the buyer thinks its the actual bomber used in the movie mentioned in the description?)

BOL is back up in price, as is sleepy time gal -- next thing you know You Cawn't Miss It will be in demand Summer's over and the casual buyers with more money than sense are back in the bidder wars?

Been noticing some crazy price swings lately... the moon? the tides?

Seems like May through late mid September is a buyers market period and those months in between swing in favor of the sellers. I have been selling on eBay for close to seven years now and pretty much close up shop during the slow months.

Re: ebay fickleness

Could not agree more Pappy. Odd times we live in.

Take the 2 1/32 Spits PRF last week for $50
Or the NF Hurricane for $37
A 1/32 Mossie for $60 shipped that got zero bids
And who pays $80-$100 for all the EE Lightnings. I've never understood that. They must all go back home for tea. Every store in the U.S. is sold out. To who? Did that thing even see combat ever?

I don't get the Heavenly Body for $80

Re: ebay fickleness

Very interesting. I won that exact plane in June 2007 for $39.07 plus $10.50 for shipping for a total of $49.57, from this seller. I might just put it back on ebay as a Buy it Now and let the losing bidders try for it. And then I will just wait for it again and rebid. Doing a quick search on ebay for completed sales of that item, within the last 2 weeks there have been 3 sales at prices of $73.99, $50.60, and $71.50 ( including shipping ).

But, at least the prices are going up. My diecast seem to be a better investment than my stocks.

Your right Pappy seems to be no rhyme or reason on the bay at times that's for sure maybe some people are too lazy to look around the net for other sources or simply have more money than brains Meanwhile the rest of us will do the homework and wait patiently until the fools and their money are soon parted. I never even spent $80 to get my BOL, YD or MnR of the bay.

You can also get this bird right now at perry's for under $50 I think........

I've been eyeing it, but considering its non-limited and was a TM cast off I wont' pay a lot for it... that $40 mark seems reasonable to me.

Just a month ago I got Sleepy Time Gal from that seller for $50 delivered... and now that's climbing. Guess the message is buy, buy, buy during the summer doldrums and then "be good" through the winter.

Re: ebay fickleness

What I found interesting about this auction is based on the bid history, it went from an opening price of $29.99, 1st bid of $30.00, then a second bid of $55.00??!!
That's a pretty steep jump in price.

Re: ebay fickleness

Ebay is a bit queer at the moment, my SB didn't fetch what I would have liked (only £31 )

I once saw a Dolittle Raider B-25 with a starting bit of £60 sell. $120 for the most boring Mitchell ever? Come On!

Value (what am I willing to pay for it?), Conversion rates (a weak dollar does really make a difference!), and Shipping (does it cost more to ship it here than I paid for the actual model?). These are all considerations I look at whenever I buy from ebay. I know how you feel Wespen - I was really interested in your SB B-24 but 2 out of the 3 considerations were against it ( and no, it wasn't consideration #1 - your price was more than fair!).

This hobby can put one into the poor house! I'm trying to enjoy it while trying to maintain some fiscal responsibility. Ebay is just too unpredictable - still, I have found some real bargains recently.

Re: ebay fickleness

Part of the price swing is going to be time of year. Summer is slow for retail, folks are vacationing, etc. Once the vacation season is over, more folks are back at work and back at the computer, which means more folks are scanning ebay. The folks paying $80.00 for this bird were not on line last month, or the month before.

Anything for a weird life.
