Re: ebay fickleness

I think that when you see auctions like this one you are seeing collectors that buy from one dealer (probably local), and are not aware of the larger market. I too was this way for quite a long while. We forum members are the most organized and informed of the entire base of diecast collectors. I know it's hard to imagine being anything else, but it's very possible especially for the newbies.

Re: ebay fickleness

Well at least he told you!!!

I've bought quite a bit from this guy and found him very reliable.

Well, yes he did, and everything did go to plan. I just found his method of operations a bit peculiar, that's all. Like I said, I'd probably buy from him again. No axe to grind.

Re: ebay fickleness

I watch lots of stuff on Ebay and probably bid on about 5% of what I watch. 95% of the time the price goes above what it will cost to buy it online. But the other 5% represent potential deals and I have picked up some nice stuff far below existing dealer retail. The key is always to set a price you are willing to pay and drop out when the bidding goes over that price. Watching for a while will also let you know what items are rare and what items will be up for auction repeatedly.

Re: ebay fickleness

I don't know about that- I've seen Inflight take a lot of flak the last few months on the various airline boards. Some of their moulds have major accuracy issues and they have gotten many of the paint schemes wrong. From what I can tell in 1/200 the top of the heap is Small World. In 1/400 really depends on the airframe as some moulds are better than others- sounds like 1/72 doesn't it!

In the last few month IF200 has taken flak over their new DC10 & L-1011 molds, but mostly due to pre pro shots hitting the net & collectors passing judgment on those rather than the finished production model.
I think the first DC-10 just hit stores.
As far as the old stuff goes like the 737 I have seen very little but praise for those models & regardless if a few little details are wrong or not IF200 moldls have the best detail for civils.
But my point was not to argues how good or bad brand X is, I was just stating you can still find a deal here or there on a quality model.
I don't buy much from the bay unless it's a line I don't order for my shop (as in Inflights case) or & older item thats no longer available.

I don't want to start a flame fest over this but given that most people here are military collectors who don't follow the civilian market I wanted to present a dissenting opinion. We do have some people here who are very knowledgable about civilian airlines (David Hingtgen for one) who can comment on this too. I'm seeing comments on other boards like "I stopped purchasing Inflight200 models. the accuracy is non-existent ... and their quality is mediocre at best ... especially for the price" and "How did Inflight go from being the new "gold standard" of 1/200 to this so quickly? This is a bit bizarre, it really isn't that long ago that you'd have been hard pressed to find meaningful criticism of most of their releases, now it's hard to avoid such criticism, and justifiably so. Most odd,"

As for their 737 one of the people who worked on the excellent Seattle Model Aircraft Company 1/400 models who produced probably the definitive early 737 moulds in that scale said of the Inflight: "this model is excellent ... but only if you have never actually seen a Boeing 737-200".

But as always your milage may vary. We all buy what we like and enjoy. I know I have a few models in my collection with mistakes that I can overlook but that others can't.

Lord forgive me, I mentioned a civil model on the forum, must be some sort of sin.
Sorry man I'm just a fan of flight in general more than anything, I love everything from modern & classic military aircraft to civils.

Nobody is trying to start a flame war, I was posting in reply to the original topic but you keep pushing the IF200 thing?
You pretty much just repeated what I said in the post you quoted,
As I said IF200's older models were regarded very highly while some of there newer molds have not been.
The 737 I bought is a older model.

In regards to Mr DH I really enjoy reading his posts & have been for some time.
He has a lot of knowledge in many areas & brings a lot to the table.
But he pretty much rips every model known to man apart with exception to the CW F-14's.
(No disrespect David just & honest observation)
If I bought models based only on his opinions I would pretty much own nothing but CW-14's.

About the second hand info from the diecast model builder, thats great he has his opinion, Im sure he makes nice models, but I need to see a model in person before making a call.
Since I work of one of the globes largest airline ground handling companies & worked in/around old 737's on the Ryan Air account while stationed at SFB, I think I have a good idea of what the aircraft looks like in real life.
So I will pass on judging the model till after seeing it in person.
