That has to be a good candidate Jim! Until the Brits learned to use 25 Pounders as anti-tank guns, and then until the 17 pounder became widely available, anti-tank gunners would have had more, and better, results if they had tossed sticky buns at them!

| Re: Worst Piece of WW2 Kit! How about this for a piece of useless kit! It must have cost a fortune to equip the army and provide every adult with a respirator during the war. The gas-mask bags were used by schoolboys for years after the war as schoolbags. This is when they did find a useful purpose.

| Re: Worst Piece of WW2 Kit! I was going to say Pro-Mask, but on the grand scale of things. It only truely pisses of those who have to carry it and potentially wear it. - Shawn | |||||||||||||

| Re: Worst Piece of WW2 Kit!
You know, when I was a youngster an uncle found a WWII British gas mask -- I think it was some version of the Civilian Duty Respirator; at least, it had the very ineffective-looking rubber schnozz that seems to typify the CDRs -- and gifted it to me. How it got from the UK to a surplus shop in California I'll never know... Somewhere along the way I lost the gas mask itself, but I still have the bag (marked 1939) and use it as a small satchel. It's fantastic! Yeech... I just did a quick search to identify the gas mask. Those things scare the ^*%$& out of me. Is there a more potent symbol of the inhumanity of war?

| Re: Worst Piece of WW2 Kit! Yes, Folgore, British schoolboys in the 1950s had many of these satchels in use as schoolbags. There was so much war surplus about that you could outfit yourself as a British soldier for very little cash! Another favourite war-surplus item was the Balaklava. There were thousands of kids who had these in winter. I don't recall ever having one, but they sure looked warm! In those days you could also buy a 'de-activated' Lee-Enfield .303 rifle from " Exchange and Mart" for about £30! ( a lot of cash for the 1950s ) MoMo | |||||||||||||
