"course I do, MD. Is it actually true, however, that you read that in a Japanese history book? I certainly hope not!

No, I am not sure there is such a thing.

Can't comment on MD's kanji skills but there are some really dodgy Japanese text books that have been written by extreme right wing groups and purport to reviewing the past in a very nationalistic bent. I don't know how widespread these books are in the Japanese education system, but the fact that they can get written and approved as official text books is not good.

Going back to the original point. Is it such a big deal that the original inhabitants of the Islands want this name corrected? The battle honour still stands.

Ooops!

Re: Iwo Jima is now Iwo To

I can see a point on this issue, but I don't think they are sad to get rid of the name. But now this place is a historical site, should the name be changed on a historical site?

Re: Iwo Jima is now Iwo To

The Enola Gay was to be exhibited at the Smithsonian. Rather than just displaying the aircraft as an exhibt, the guy wanted to make a political statement which can be exemplified by this:

Singled out as an example of the exhibit's tone was one of the original wall legends, which read, ``For most Americans, it was a war of vengeance. For most Japanese, it was a war to defend their unique culture against Western imperialism.''

Basically, the SOB wanted to lay the blame for the war in the Pacific at the feet of the Americans.

Here is a good resource for looking at the exhibit and controversy. It has the scripts - look at the 1/14/1994 entry.

Re: Iwo Jima is now Iwo To

The name should have stayed the same "Iwo Jima" as it always has been....This name change reminds me when they changed the name of "The Little Bighorn " Custers last stand park
a few years back....They need to leave stuff alone and stop messing with changing the names to stuff.

I don't disagree, but apparently before the war it WAS called Iwo To, not Iwo Jima.

They can call it what they want. But they know and we know what happened on that island. This isn't such a big deal to me, now when they start re-naming places like Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau, etc.. The world had better wake the heck up!!

I know the pre war name was that Iwo To....I'm not too sure how all the vets who have fought there and lived to tell the tale
like that name change..

Re: Iwo Jima is now Iwo To

I can't see there is a big deal as the the island was apparently called Iwo To before the war. The name change doesn't change the history of the island.

As for Enola Gay, I say put that old girl on exhibit and keep her there. It was a famous aircraft and played an important role in WWII, if the Japanese don't like it that's to bad.

When the awful raid on Dresden was decided...

war was virtually over for Germany.

The martyr of Dresden might have been aimed at Stalin, to warn him that western powers wouldn't hesitate to commit massive murders to stop him.

For scientists and bomber command, it was also the ultimate full scale experiment of the "firestorm" theory...
