Re: Iwo Jima is now Iwo To

I need to get a copy of that to watch it MoMo.

Hi Starman,
I recorded these documentaries in VHS PAL, which is incompatible with NTSC ( US?N. AMERICA )standard. As I recall, 'cos I haven't watched them in years, there were three documentaries, each about 1hour, 40 minutes in length. They covered : The Hong-Kong and Far East fiasco; British Bomber Command Policy ( they knifed Harris big time! ) and Dieppe. They were called " The Honour and the Valour ".

I was quite shocked when I watched them because, as I said, they seemed to purport to be the current ( at the time ) Canadian take on many operations in the war. I distinctly caught the impression that they blamed the Brits for slaughtering thousands of Canadians in useless gestures and Ops, rather than British forces.

I think that they made several valid, if debatable, points on the matter of Dieppe. It was an ill-founded operation, based mostly on speculation, and should never have gone ahead in the form that it did. However, that is a matter of historical discussion now, not an excuse to vent a personal spleen by singling-out one disaster which affected one group more than another group. I think that the blame-game should play on the lack of foresight by the planners rather than wild speculation that the British High Command and Churchill conspired to 'blood' the Canadians to pull Canada closer to the struggle. I would refute this, personally. To the Canadians, New Zealanders, South Africans Australians and other countries of the Empire, there was no question in 1939 of where their loyalties lay. They looked on Britain as the " Mother Country", and thank God for it!

People of my generation have no doubt whatsoever that we are all of the same breed, sharing the same values, and with a common heritage which transcends oceans and boundaries.

Too bad that this has been erroded and chipped away at by those small people who can't see over their garden wall, and who wish to remould history to suit their own distorted view of the world!

Unitas ad astra!

Great satire, MoMo! I by no means always agree with you, but you do have a way with words.

Do you all realize that my vacation comment was sarcasim right. I think that this is rubbish my self. Skunky said it best about after losing the war argue about how unfair it is.

Yes, MD, we knew that!

And it was I, not Skunky, who wrote that brilliant line you agree with. (God help me if I'm being confused with the black and white rat!)

"course I do, MD. Is it actually true, however, that you read that in a Japanese history book? I certainly hope not!
