How's Your Russian Air Force?

Hey guys, the newest IL Sturmovik releases from IXO got me hankering to build on the meager WWII Russian presence in my collection. Currently I have only one aircraft with a red star, the easy model Mig-3 with the white paint scheme, and a very nice piece IMHO (can I get an amen Gort? ). Anyway, just curious as to what everyone else has for Russian representation in their collections.

I also have the white Mig-3 with 4 other various types/schemes of the Easy Model. I do have 2 IXO's, the little green I-16 with the open cockpit and a La-7. Very nice overall.

Re: How's Your Russian Air Force?

It's a shame I haven't any WWII iconic Russian warbirds in my collection yet, but if Hobby Master makes them in 1/48 - particularly the IL2...I'd be first in line to buy them!

Re: How's Your Russian Air Force?

I've got the Model Power Il-2 and I-16; the I-16 in particular is a good model for the price. I've seen IXO's version, and while it is more detailed, I prefer the Model Power version -- no over-inked panel lines!

Re: How's Your Russian Air Force?

I only have three at my airfiled and they are all from IXO.

1. I-16 (OK except for the too-tall windscreen)

2. La-7

3. Yak-7

I got them to fill the void in Soviet aircraft, but would gladly replace them when something better comes along.

Re: How's Your Russian Air Force?

Mine is completely devoid of any aircraft. Sorry, but IXO and paper-thin MRCs don't cut it for me.

Re: How's Your Russian Air Force?

I have a Mig 3, a Yak 3, the I 16, and an as yet unidentified model that someone else put together and painted that I bought at a garage sale. I think it is Sturmovick, but haven't checked in my books yet.

Re: How's Your Russian Air Force?

I've bought almost all of the IXO, Matchbox,Yat Min, Model Power, Hobby Master and Easy Model planes with red stars on them so my collection includes several I-16s plus the Yak-3 and Yak-9, the Mig-3, Mig -15, Mig-21 and Mig -23 , the LA-7 and IL-2M. Of these, the Hobby Master Mig-21 is clearly the best but Model Power's I-16 and IXO's Yak-9 and LA-7 are OK if you are willing to make improvements. Other diecast product is available. Gaincorp's SU-27, for example and, if you are really venturesome, the Atlas promotional series a number of years ago featured the Yak-3 and IL-2M in 1:100 scale and the IL-4 and SB-2 bombers in 1:144 scale. I have all four of these but can only recommend the IL-4, which isn't bad considering its size and who made it ( the same guys that made the IXO models ). Some of these are available via eBay sellers from time to time. Also scheduled are Hobby Master's Mig-29 in diecast and Easy Model plans to do a Mig-15, a Mig-29 and a SU-27 in the near future- all in plastic, however. Finally, the DeAgostini biplane series includes an I-15 in Spanish Civil War livery, which I plan to get . This too, is made by the IXO/Altaya gang so quality will be a major issue but that's not a problem for me so long as the model arrives in one piece. One plane I would love to see someone make in diecast is the PE-2, one of the outstanding light bombers of WW II. Like a decent, IL-2, this would probably sell like hotcakes.
