Re: Passion vs. Profit

Actually, the opposite is true: DS9 has better character development (by far) than Voyager. You must have them mixed up...

Voyager only became good (in the character development department) after Seven of Nine appeared. Even then it can't match DS9.

I love all of them though. Take that, MoMo.

Anyway, back to the thread...

FVD

Nope FVD I'll have to agree to disagree, Voyager is still numero uno in my book but I have to agree without reservation that 7 of 9 was truly an asset to the crew . (BTW don't you think that Captain Janeway is one of the best of the Starfleet captains and that she impersonates Margaret Thatcher rather well ?)

Janeway was just fine (and yeah, come to think of it, there was a bit of Lady Thatcher in her, I suppose), and I do like "Voyager" a lot (did I mention 7 of 9? ). But I prefer DS9 overall, although it took a bit of time for me to warm up to it. In my opinion, there is no bad Star Trek series anyway, I don't care what MoMo says.

I have to admit that I was an avid fan of the original series of Star Trek and still enjoy watching the reruns even now.

Watching them today the cardboard sets and over acting look really dated but it was the spirit of the show that always grabbed me.

I think the modern series has lost that original idea of going where no man has gone before.
Some of those old scripts were very profound for the time and very innovative.

(OK seeing as its confession time, I liked the Star wars films, there I said it).

I'm celebrating my emigrating to America during what I call the "Star Wars" era, Circa 1977 - that's 30 years ago in fact!

Re: Passion vs. Profit

I reckon we should add Star trek to the topics to avoid such as Sex, Politics and Religion

It was pure soap opera in space that concentrated on transposing human gender issues into human-alien relationships, what a complete waste of time and money. I have seen about every science fiction series and movie ever made and Star trek is well down the list imo. Star trek Next Generation was ok, but the only good thing about Voyager was the cgi introduction and theme music. Janeway was about as convincing a Star ship Captain as Audrey Hepburn would have been in the role, "it's the loons, there back.........and they've got lasers"

I really wish you would state your true opinions and feelings, Aircrafty. Holding back on your thoughts because you don't want to offend others is going to give you an ulcer someday if you aren't careful.

However, that being said, I don't much care for Star Trek and sci-fi shows either. I liked New Generation (Picard, right?) but otherwise I never really watched any others (Stargate was cool but that was more due to the influence of ancient cultures on the worlds they encountered) much in general. I am usually one of the few computer geeks in my company that is more interested in what is going on in the sports world than what is happening in the sci-fi series. I readily admit is it because I probably because lack the cognitive and creative ability to enter the realm but I generally don't "get it."

Now to enter my two cents worth on the actual focus of the thread I tend towards buying what I like now regardless of appreciation. When I first started the hobby a few years ago I bought a lot of items based on member recommendations. However, I only have so much space and I don't like having my models stored in boxes rather than on display so I chose to be more focused. Like FVD and Starman I am gravitating to the 1/48 and larger scales and am buying only the items I really want. I have a few models I won't part with - and a few on the radar - in 1/72 but by and large I am gravitating to the larger scales. So, I do hope my models at least keep their value - quite a few Dragons in my past that didn't - but I will no longer buy anything because it is "hot" or it may rise in value. I think that is a viable motivation but I simply have decided to be more focused and savor every purchase.

And I thought I was a warm and fuzzy type

Stargate was a terrific series with a good combination of action, humour, special effects ..................and rather attractive females

Re: Passion vs. Profit

I haver thought about selling the diecast planes and tanks that I collect. In a high proportion of cases I alter the models, ranging from relatively minor weathering to total repaints. By so doing, I render these models unsalable to purist buyers who want their planes or tanks exactly as the manufacturers made them. Which is fine by me.
