flyXwireI only have my http://members.tripod.com/~ds9promen...ngi_Rules.html to adhere to when it comes to Passion vs.Profit in diecast collecting. You can pick or choose the ones applies to you in an appropriate situation I suppose.

AAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH! It was a trap! I hate all that Star Trek dross! Star Soap!

MoMo, I would've thought that with your discerning literary and media palate you would enjoy Sci-Fi (plenty of mythology and philosophy to go around). As regards Star Trek the finest series is Voyager (seven seasons) as it has great plot lines and character development (the rest are somewhat forgettable, especially Deep space 9).

Stargate (original & Atlantis) are also exceptionally good examples of the Sci-Fi genre .

Re: Passion vs. Profit

I buy what I like/want/can afford. If they increase in value, great, but I have no intention of selling, so it really does not matter.

Once again I find wisdom and agreement in the sage words of the Captain! I buy for fun, don't really plan on selling (my wife can sell them off when I die if she wants), and enjoy getting a new model that looks good and if it gains in value, so be it.

Ditto. I suppose it would be nice to be able to speculate but I have neither the time, space or money to "invest" in models. (I feel my money is far better spent in a retirement plan). Also, I am far too particular about which pieces are in my collection to fill my basement with models I only intend to sell.

Re: Passion vs. Profit

At first I collected "anything I liked", which has led to storage ... issues. (And like Starman below -- many Speccast models in the closet). Now I am leaning towards only buying stuff that will at least retain its value over time -- helps keep things a bit reasonable as I have no self control (but I'm working on that...)

Plus, I like the fact that there's only so many of a particular model I have -- makes it feel kinda special compared to something anyone could run out and buy at the local Wal-Mart... so I'm leaning towards limited editions and special commisions only at this point.

(though this may get blown out of the water when those 1:32 Phantoms show up from 21st, et al. Like I said... no self-control... and I'm still a sucker for a good sale, which is why I have a couple new Speccast Corsairs. Hey, they were $10, each... and I like the paint jobs.)

I confess that I do get a small rush when I can sell a model at 10x retail value, but that's certainly rare and I'm not banking on putting the twins through college with it... First and foremost my addiction to this hobby was borne out of interest in the subject matter, but making a buck is never a bad thing in my book.

I agree Pappy, and this is pretty much my philosophy as well.. I love collecting, but I am not going to throw my money away either..

Cool Re: Passion vs. Profit

Well guys I started collecting A/C simply because I love those stupid flying machines. I have no intentions of selling my personal collection. Having 6 Grandsons I hope at least one will have an interest in aircraft, if so he may end up with all of them after I Croak. I buy the A/C I like, and I try to purchase at least one each of all the major aircraft for specific eras both friend and foe. I know many of you guys like to have all of the many different liveries of the same A/C, which is great, but I would have to purchase a warehouse if I were to try and do that. So if there is any money to be made on my collection, it will be afrter I am long gone, or we are in such dire straights that we can no longer buy food.

Re: Passion vs. Profit

I buy diecast because I love airplanes (and tanks, etc...). Value has no bearing on what I buy. If I happen to have a rare model (I know I have a few), I certainly don't feel a better man for it. In fact, I wish everyone who wants the same model could get it for $5 at the local store, even if I myself pair $50 for it. I derive no enjoyment from other's frustrated desires whatsoever, and I certainly am not looking to gain financially from such a situation.

However, I respect those who collect with value in mind, it is a perfectly legitimate form of collecting. It's just different from what I do.

It's too bad the two forms of collecting must by definition clash on the diecast marketplace, but so be it. That's life. We can still all live peacefully side by side and enjoy our hobby in our own ways.

Re: Passion vs. Profit

There's a lot better investments out there than die-cast airplanes.

Actually, the opposite is true: DS9 has better character development (by far) than Voyager. You must have them mixed up...

Voyager only became good (in the character development department) after Seven of Nine appeared. Even then it can't match DS9.

I love all of them though. Take that, MoMo.

Anyway, back to the thread...
