| A Baseball Thread As I was sitting here watching ESPN scoreboard and rooting against the Indians the idea hit me. How about some baseball talk. I'm a Tigers fan and have been since 1980 or so. ( I was young) Yes, I remember the 1984 World Serious. What is your team? Do you hate Bonds like I hate Bonds? Do you love Pete Rose like I do? Chime in... boohoo......Tribe lost | |||||||||||||

Great idea Parsig! Well, I'm a NY Mets fan, although I grew up and live in Iowa (we only have AAA here!). Anyway, been with the orange and blue since about age 10. They're in first right now leading the Braves, but if you're a Mets fan, you now the drill, great regular season, then fade away in post season (thanks to your Tigers, last year!). And your boys spanked the Mets today I see! Although, my all time favorite player is Sweet Lou Whitaker, that should make you happy Parsig, I played 2nd base most of my years in competative ball and just always loved watching Sweet Lou. Favorite Met of all time: Ho Jo baby! easy8 And to answer your questions: 1. Bonds is a joke and a disgrace to the game...IMHO 2. Put Charlie Hustle in the Hall of Fame! | |||||||||||||

| Re: A Baseball Thread Oh you just had to bring up the 1984 World Series didn't ya. . S.D. Padres fan here just like the Chargers in the Super Bowl they should have never made it that far. As for Pete Rose IMHO he should be pardoned there are far worse things going on in baseball like steriod use, it's like if have nothing to hide then do a drug test. Do I need to say anymore about Bonds. Or at least in the record books if your suspected of use put a footnote of it. | |||||||||||||

| Re: A Baseball Thread Pretty stoked at the moment as my son's "AA" side (Marlins) just won the local little league "AA" tournament. Great game - much more exciting than most Major league games. Beat the Padre's as well to boot (Yippee). | |||||||||||||

| Re: A Baseball Thread I agree, great idea for discussion. Baseball is my favorite spectator sport (basketball my favorite participant sport). I'm a lifetime Oakland A's fan. I even remember their World Series threepeat in the early 70's ('72-'73-'74). It's tough being a fan of a low budget team, developing great players only to stock other rosters through free agency (like the Yankees and Red Sox). Tough year for injuries already, but they are hanging in with unbelievable starting pitching including the best righty (Dan Haren) in the AL, imho. For the record, I would let Rose in the Hall though I would also be tempted to keep him out simply on principle- that is, for being a moron for the way he has acted since he retired. As for Bonds, I have always despised him. I will never forget his temper tantrum in Spring Training one year when he was still with the Pirates and threw a fit over a team photo. Leyland put him in his place- too bad he didn't learn a lesson. | |||||||||||||

| Re: A Baseball Thread RED SOX all the way!!.... Few things I enjoy more than watching the Sox play the Evil Empire...but unlike many Boston fans, I don't hate the Yankees...Oh, they must be annihilated at all cost - but I don't hate them..(Some of their fans could use a good beating though)..... ![]() | |||||||||||||

| Re: A Baseball Thread We Brits have short attention spans, now if you guys could just speed things up a little I think you have the makings of a great game there. (too much talking between plays). Sadly the powers that be always show Baseball in the wee small hours so nobody gets to see it. Being a bit of a night owl I watch it sometimes and although it took a while to figure out I can say that I am now a fan. | |||||||||||||

| Re: A Baseball Thread Baseball is my favorite sport to play and I have only recently (I am 36) given it up in favor of softball. Too much time dedicated to the adult league practices and games with a young family so the lesser demands of softball satisfies my itch to play ball. I prefer to either watch the game in person or on the radio - I have very fond memories of summer evenings in my bed when the KC Royals were on a west coast swing and the games went deep into the night. Television doesn't do it justice in my opinion. I agree with Timbo that watching kids play is the best - I am in my first year of coaching my 6 year old's Tball team and it is a hilarious, frustrating, rewarding and altogether great experience. I am a huge KC Royals and Red Sox fan myself. Back in the late 70's when the Royals were in annual post-season dogfights with the Yankees I started loving the Red Sox because they were the team that disliked the Yankees more than we did. After reading a book about Ted Williams' baseball and military career I was hooked. The Royals winning the series in 1985 was fantastic but the Red Sox loss in 1986 was as painful as the Royal's victory was exhilirating. Billy Buckner later played with the Royals and I had the pleasure of meeting him several times - a real standup and genuine guy. I don't hate Bonds but he certainly isn't on my list of favorites. His talent - evident before the juice when he was skinny - is surpassed only by his lack of class. As for Pete Rose, I am neither a fan nor a detractor. I have always been an AL guy and didn't watch much of him outside of the occassional game growing up. However, it is my opinion he be judged on his play on the field as it relates to the Hall of Fame and the fact he is excluded when there are so many other men of questionable character in the Hall is hypocritical. He may not be the smartest guy and bet on baseball but he is still one of the greatest players in history so he should be in Cooperstown. | |||||||||||||

| Re: A Baseball Thread Frankly Rose is an idiot and deserved what he got. Betting on games HE was involved in (ok - he says always to win) calls into question his sense of ethics and morality. It doesn't take a lot for him to then go the next step, and start trying to manipulate results. This is just as bad if not worse than steroids. All that does is enhance yourself. This could affect the entire team. MLB was right to give the punnishment that they did. Makes an example of him and also sends the message that this will not be tollerated. Now to even the score, they also need to get equally tough on drugs, and tell the players union where to go. | |||||||||||||
