Re: A Baseball Thread

Cricket: As explained to a foreigner...
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

The classic description of Cricket Timbo, I have not seen that for years but silly though it sounds its all true.

I was a mean fast bowler in my youth and always tried to strike fear into the opposing batsman.
Ah those happy hours spent in the club house drinking warm beer while the rain deluged the pitch.

After watching Baseball a while I can see similarities between the two games. I think the fear factor is much the same and the speed of the ball also.

Another aspect common to both games is the ability of the bowler/pitcher to move the ball in the air.
Clever stuff.

God Bless America.

No bounce in a Baseball pitch though. That bounce adds a lot to Cricket delivery, esp with a good spin bowler.

Re: A Baseball Thread

As I was sitting here watching ESPN scoreboard and rooting against the Indians the idea hit me. How about some baseball talk. I'm a Tigers fan and have been since 1980 or so. ( I was young) Yes, I remember the 1984 World Serious.

What is your team? Do you hate Bonds like I hate Bonds? Do you love Pete Rose like I do? Chime in...

boohoo......Tribe lost

Ah, Parsig, the '84 Tigers. Bless you boys. That was memorable season. But the Tigers' season that stands out
most in my memory is the great '68 World Champs. Say what you will about Denny McLain now, but in '68 he was
THE stud in mlb.

Re: A Baseball Thread

Hey, I must have hit a wrong key, I didn't finish my thought.

I can remember every player on that '68 Tigers' team, even at my advanced
age. I can only remember about 1/2 the players on the '84 team. The
Tigers '68 World Series win is a defining moment in my life.

Bonds is a pretender, he can deny drug (steroid) use, but I don't believe him.
Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame for his exploits on the field.

Re: A Baseball Thread

Hey timbo, Congrats on you son's win. I just came from a Lake Elsinore Storms game (S.D. Padres -A farm team), now there is some good baseball without the big league prices and with the occasional pro coming back from re-hab. To help the players in minor leagues survive, here anytime one of the players hits a homerun they pass a hat out for contributions. The game is played the way it should be played from the heart and a chance for the "big" leagues and not how much a team will pay you.

Thanks LzyBins. It all starts somewhere, It's great to see how much the kids have improved over the season. This was a the first season for keeping scores winning/loosing for a lot of them. At the beginning they were making some real howlers throwing the ball round the field and not getting anybody out, but by the end they were making some excellent plays, getting quite a few great double plays as well. Don't think we managed a triple, but it was pretty close. I have to say my nerves were more frazzled watching some of those games then the kids.

This ex-pat here even learned a thing or two. I can almost follow a game and understand why plays go the way they do.

The kids are going to see the San-Jose Giants (AAA team for the SF Giants) on Friday night. After the game there will be a movie on the field and a camp out in the outfield.

Re: A Baseball Thread

Ahh, Jim, I think we have a kindred soul when it comes to "delivery." I pitched (baseball) from freshman year high school through my injury shortened college career and old folks baseball. I love "chin music." I own the plate and if a so-called hitter wants it he needs to take it. I (used) to bust all of them inside until they could handle it and most bailed out. As an old fogey softball player I still pine for the days of pitchers being able to strike fear into the opponent but at the end of the day I play for the "boy's club" atmosphere of sitting in the parking lot hoisting a few and reminiscing of our past glory.

I have watched cricket a few times and would love to give it a shot. I am always looking for new sports to play (I wish I had been "quality" enough to give lacross a try in my younger days as it looks quite fun) and found rugby (not your country's sport I know) a great deal of fun as well. Sport is quite the uniting force if only we could all agree to leave it on the field.

Hay Chiefs - England are the current Rugby world cup champions! Now that is a game. (Beats that other oval ball game hands down)

Haha! I love rugby as I played on my university club team! We have a local bar that is a HUGE rugby hangout with team flags, blood (yes, blood) and all other sorts of memorabilia. The University of Kansas is a big supporter of team rugby and the town loves the sport. I guarantee if you come to visit and hit Johnnie's Tavern you will have friends for life! I love my American football but rugby is a fantastic sport as well. As one of the few alumni of the game who can say I still have all of my own teeth (a rare thing indeed but perhaps I was just fast enough for my own good, lol) it is a thrill to play and watch.

Glad to discover another rugby island over here. It's pretty big in the bay area (relativly speaking). There are a lot of Tongans over here built like brick out houses. I wouldn't like to run into one of them.

It's the one sport I realy miss from not living in the UK anymore. Used to play 2nd row at school and College.
