Re: A Baseball Thread

Baseball? Baseball? Someone mentioned Baseball! Don't get me started on HOW MUCH I LOVE BASEBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Life long Orioles fan here. Sorry, Parsig9, but I hate the Tigers if only because that 35-5 start in 1984 pretty much put the kaboosh on any chance on the O's repeating. (I also hate the Brewers since Pete Vuckovich beat Jim Palmer on the last day of the 1982 season to send the Brewers into the post season instead of the O's. Yes, I love talking about my baseball grudges. )

RE: Bonds - I used to defend him if only because he was never convicted of doing anything illegal. However, after the last book on him came out (Sorry, I don't recall the authors or title?) which pretty much chronicled his day to day drug use, I got a little tired of the Bonds self-righteous attitude and denials. The rest of the game seems to come to grips with it's errors and seems to be making (Fleeting perhaps, true) steps to correct itself and it's image. Bonds stands above it all and frankly seems to be a LOUSY embassador for the game.

I certainly understand that I can never really understand Bonds. He IS NOT like the rest of us. I don't know of anyone whose father was a All-Star and whose godfather was one of the greatest players of all times. (Willie Mays) I don't really know anyone else who grew up surrounded by those conditions. Nonetheless, Bonds seems to have gone beyond the bounderies of, "You cannot understand me," and devolved into just being a thug. (Morally, not physically.)

I'm sorry that one of the greatest players of all time (Aaron is the greatest hitter, Ruth was the greatest player.) has been reduced to this. He didn't need help to prove himself and this is just going to be his personal asterik.

RE: Rose - He has gotten what he deserved and I truly hope he is never permitted into the Hall. He was a great player, and one of the greatest hitters ever. He can be an incredibly charming guy. (His main merchandising vendor was warehoused right next door to us. The owner is a huge baseball fan and knew I was too. Whenever Rose was in town he would make sure to bring him by to hang out for 5 minutes. Rose tells funny stories.)

However, the Dowd report has plenty of evidence that he bet against the Reds and he has admitted to betting while in uniform. His coming clean was nothing more than an opportunity to make a few bucks and was completely disingenous. (I'm not going to get into the gambing is a disease issue. That is a whole other ball of wax.....)

Ultimately, what is comes down to, is that he took away the chance every player in a Reds uniform during his years of wearing a World Series ring. I can't say that the Reds would absolutely have won anything if Rose hadn't bet, but I can't they wouldn't either. His betting ruined that chance. Any fan of the game knows how capricious the Baseball Gods can be. (I think the 1969 Mets are proof of that.)

If I hear at some point that every single member of the organization (During Roses years) has forgiven him for his misdeeds, than I'm willing to let it go. Until then, Rose stays out of the Hall.

Anything for a weird life.

Re: A Baseball Thread

Being a bit of a night owl I watch it sometimes and although it took a while to figure out I can say that I am now a fan.

O.k., then, Jim. Would you please explain cricket to me?

Cricket: As explained to a foreigner...
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

Ooops!

I'm not sure, given the prior explanation of cricket, but that sounds like a challenge.
